They've been riding the Mario/Zelda train for far too long. It's time to create another franchise as great as those to were. I enjoyed ActRaiser 2 more than ActRaiser 1. Quite frankly, I think Dragon Quest was boring as f**k until Pt 8. Any entry of Earthbound is boring as hell. The Zelda and Mario franchise is tired. That should start a few fires. It's my slightly tipsy, yet honest opinion.
(I wouldn't mind them creating another franchise... but the question is, will people embrace it?
If it's as creative and fun to play as the NES era SMB and Zelda were to play back then I would see people embracing it. Imagine games with 80s and 90s Nintendo imagination, but with the possibilities of today's gaming hardware? I tried to slog through the last 3 Zelda and Super Mario games, I just couldn't do it. I felt I've done it a thousand times prior. Pikmin, while a pretty great idea, wasn't the next Mario or Zelda.
I feel they need to make a new game franchise that makes you feel like the first time you played a Mario or Zelda game. I just don't think that they have the same magic that made them so popular to begin with. I think they're riding on the coattails of phenomenal ideas of days past and peoples nostalgia. I love Nintendo and I want them to succeed, but continuing on milking out Mario and Zelda will last only so long. I did sort of enjoy the remake of DQ IV though.
