Re: Hockey!
NHL is the only sports game I buy almost every year, but I just so happen to be as passionate about hockey as I am about nerd stuff and maybe slightly more so. NHL is a great series if you want to pick up a sports game, though I realize for some reason they're taboo in retro circles. Aside from questionable AI (that you probably won't even care about unless you're a loony purist like me) the gameplay is really good and the modes are right around the point where they're abundant but EA hasn't ruined them yet like some other series' (looking at you NCAA).

Re: Hockey!
NHL 2002 is still my favorite hockey game of all time (I own it cib for PS2, oxbox, and PC), but this reboot of '94 could change that.

Re: Hockey!
Whatsup guys. I was just asking google what the best PS1 hockey game is(was?) and didn't really find anyone particularly answering that question. Then I end up here, and well, it's close. But I gotta resurrect this one to ask.. What's the best PS1 hockey game?

Re: Hockey!
I'll throw two out:
NHL 2000 - you always want to target that last sports title for a system before all the good programmers started working on the next generation's game.
NHL Open Ice: 2 on 2 Challenge - one of my favorite unique PSX games. Only came out on PSX, never a sequel. Midway's NHL version of NBA Jam.

For some reason we gravitated towards NHL Faceoff in the PS1 days. Couldn't tell you why or for better or worse though.

Is it safe to say newer the better, or does an older installment stand out?

I truly couldn't say. I rarely go back to old sports games I'm just going off memory. For whatever reason we went with Sony's entry for a couple years there.

Re: Hockey!
Right on right on. I'm basically hoping to enjoy the fruits of someones experience. I'm not going to play a whole lot of it. But if I could be pointed in the direction of the more primo PS hockey experiences i'd gladly take your guys's word for it. Instead of messing with a bunch of games possible not detecting all the key differences or knowing which details would be making one better than the other.
I'll check out the Faceoff series for now.
I used to own one of the NHLsomethin 97's or 98's back in their release day. I was about 13 then. Can't say I tried too hard or played it very long. Liked hockey but didn't really get any good at the video games. Ended up lending it to a kid who managed to make the disc unplayable and his parents were dicks so they didn't care to replace it. Either way, I think it might have been the NHL series.
I think I heard somewhere that one of the 2001's, i forget which exactly, had goofy scoring shenanigans where its way too easy to score. Anyone here encounter that?
I've messed around with Rock the Rink, 2 on 2 Open Ice, the Gretzky one, and Faceoff 2001 wouldnt get past the first loading screen on ePSXe. Rock the Rink is the most fun so far. Just want to nail down a good "real" hockey game
little update, nhl 2001 is proving to be entertaining and playable/intuitive for a noob like me

"Breakfast, shmreakfast. Look at the score, for Christ's sake. It's only the second period and I'm up 12 to 2. Breakfasts come and go, Rene, but Hartford, "the Whale," they only beat Vancouver once, maybe twice in a lifetime."
Anyone have Elitserien 95 or 96? Would love to play Sega as Frölunda!
