I never got 4, no interest in it nor 5 in all those years.
If you like 3 at all you should check out 4 on GOG. It includes the DVD version cutscenes so it looks pretty great. It's got the best writing and production values of the entire series.

While I still personally prefer the original sprite scaling games 1, 2, and Privateer, Wing Commander IV is a fan favorite for good reason. It's a pretty epic space opera and in my opinion probably the peak of the FMV era in terms of quality. Prophecy on the other hand is skip-able. It's fun but inconsequential. The Freespace games came out and mopped the floor with it.

I could go on about Wing Commander for weeks so I'll try and stop now so the thread can move on.

I have one of them on my Origin account (I think it's IV; I can't remember, and I'm too lazy to check). Never played it, and I don't even remember why I have it, but I do.

EA gave Wing Commander III away for free on Origin a while ago. They may have done the same for IV at a later date I don't know.

Then it's probably III that I have. Anytime I see free stuff, I snatch it up on the off chance that I might actually end up wanting to play it some day.

I'm hit and miss on WC3, kind of lost me how they changed it style wise (and I don't mean real 3D and cheesy FMV.) I think I said in my post I have all the main line WC games 1-4+5 (ie Prophecy.) I've played through all but 4 though 5 was on GBA all the stages are there and it's not easy either. I've never touched the spiritual sequel stuff like Freespace.

ELKIN if you didn't pay for it, you got WC3 as it was given away at least 2x I can remember on Origin to try and reel in more sign ups. Admittedly some damn good bait.

I've briefly played a few of them. I still have my Wing Commander: Prophecy discs. For some reason, most space sims never drew me in. My brother put a good deal more into them, though. I think his favorite to this day is Freelancer.

Freespace 1 is dull, Freespace 2 is a really wonderful game.

Starlancer and Freelancer were the actual Roberts-family-made spiritual successors to Wing Commander. Starlancer is skippable. It's... sorta alright at best. Basically it goes back to the "World War II in space" theme that Wing Commander 1 had going but the missions are overly long without any checkpoints and there's too many frustrating "chase torpedoes down" ones. I had fun with it as a genre fanatic but I'd never recommend it. Dreamcast had a surprisingly nice port other than some annoyingly missing cinematics.

Freelancer though is pretty great and even today many people hold it up as one of the best space games ever. It's not my favorite (mostly because the otherwise really interesting conspiracy-driven story putters to an underwhelming conclusion) but I understand where the love is coming from, that and the modding community took this game to places far beyond the vanilla version.

It's less of a sim than the others because of the simplified flight mechanics yet they still feel good and arcadey. Freelancer is probably a huge reason Star Citizen has made buckets of money because people so badly want the idealized version of this game.

You know what makes me happy?

The rare time when a licensed game is really good. I mean so good that it stands on its own as a good game irrespective of the license. I'm thinking of Disney games on Genesis and Capcom licensed games on NES. There're probably a lot of other examples too.

Damnit that's what it was, I got them confused. I think I did back then too because I heard the first one kind of blew so I didn't even bother pirating to find out it sucked or not and didn't even care about the sequel because of it. You're reminding me what I saw too was moaning about not shorter missions and lots of chasing this or guard that stuff people hate. I almost did get it once on DC but I ignored it in the end, still don't feel like I missed out. I remember people going off on Roberts saying he forgot how to make a good game and the classic 'F that guy I'm done with him' type stuff being posted.

I think it's also why I avoided Freelancer too, and I did noticed it has sustained a community, one even EA has tried to ape back like with that decade old Special Ops free download Wing Commander title (which fans consider WC6 after Prophecy being 5.) You're probably right about Star Citizen. I so want to donate to it, but I don't like how much they want you to shovel over just to get a ship, let alone one that won't put you at a disadvantage and suck when the game goes live. It just seems grubby considering the millions they've pulled in and the slow crawl of progress. I'm on their mailer and keep up to date on it.

Perhaps I should track down Freelancer at some point and see why people are putting that much cash/trust into Star Citizen.
