I have a feeling the three classic Ys 3 versions aren't very different though. That might get a bit redundant. :P
They are fundamentally similar but vary in quality.

The Turbo version is by far the best. The soundtrack is phenomenal and the gameplay is on-point.

Genesis is next. It lacks the epic-sounding soundtrack but the controls are decent.

SNES is dfl. Really sloppy hit detection. The silver lining is that it's extremely easy to hit the max level very early in the game. Of course this doesn't help much against the broken/annoying final boss.

And as Exumy hinted at, the Super Famicom exclusives (IV and V) are the weakest in the series. Note that the PC Engine CD Ys IV is a wholly different game (and is awesome).

Actually, there is even an exploit early on in the first dungeon of the Super Nintendo release of Ys III which you can use to reach max level pretty easily. You'll still likely struggle in the final dungeon, but it's not impossible. I managed to beat the Super Nintendo port without too much trouble.

Yeah the SNES port is never super hard, just irksome compared to others.

If you want to play a baby version of Ys III check it out on PS2. I haven't played the Famicom port yet.

And yeah, Felghana rules. I keep going back and forth in regards to whether I like Felghana more than (Turbo) Ys III or vice versa.

I didn't even know it had a PS2 release, Japanese I assume.

As for my own RPG progress report, I've been working on videos more than playing lately. But I've been simultaneous dicking around with Super Mario RPG, Rhapsody (PSX), and Princess Maker 2 (DOS). Absolutely nothing new for me, all game's I've been in the past (doesn't hurt that they're all really really short).

How's the DS port of 1&2? I picked that up first, then never got around to playing it (it was an Atlus USA release), then got a Turbo and picked up the Turbo version.

I've heard it was pretty bad. But I'm obviously not an expert. :P

It's pretty good. Not as good as the TGCD version, but I certainly enjoyed it (and appreciated its portability).

The DS port is terrible to be honest.

If you can't play it on PSP, play it like this.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

Probably the "worst" of the Ys I & II's but still pretty good. There's the addition of an attack button, which was an unusual choice but it manages to work okay. There's also an area map on the lower screen which helps tremendously in some areas, as well as a new dungeon.

The graphics are a bit funky. Kinda slanted for an additional pseudo-3D effect.

Great rendition of the soundtrack, and notably different from that of the other versions.

Worth playing but the Turbo, PSP, and (most recent) PC versions are better.
