Street Fighter 4: Dedicated Post-Release Impression Thread

Post by gradualmeltdown »

Post your impressions here if you want. I have to sleep now but here's what I think after about 4 hours. Haven't played online yet, I wanted to learn all of the characters basic move sets and unlock everything first

When you first start playing its really odd, the hit detection is very accurate and the particle fx from moves make it hard to gauge where moves are really "hitting". Once you settle in its very much Street Fighter but not SF2. Those tired old sweep tech's and fireball's barrage's won't work like they used to. The timing and priority of moves is very differnt. Here's highlights of the game for me :

Graphics :

This game is absolutely amazing looking. Some characters fair better than others during close ups but everything is so polished. In my opinion the anime sequences work and anyone that really follows Street Fighter will get the story. The HD video for Xbox 360 explained a lot about some in game sequences. Its still vague, but what do you want? It is Street Fighter.

The animation is stunning. Facial and body reactions to movement and attacks is just fun to watch. Just before getting hammered with an Ultra Combo Ryu's face is covered in fear! Watching Honda eat a Super Combo fireball to the gut in slow-mo during death is good times. If he puked orange like SF2 I would have cried :)

Backgrounds can be a little bland but some of them are really fun. Characters aren't assigned a background in arcade it is random I think. Not sure if I like that or not.

Rivals mode in arcade is cool, you face off with a specific rival who has taunts and a back story. Something simple other games have done, but being an SF nut Ryu vs Sagat done so very well was awesome!

I've been playing 3s for a decade now, so I wan't somthing different, even if SF4 isn't on par with 3s.

Also, what in your opinion makes 3s the better technical fighter? The focus system in SF4 seems really deep and makes for some really great combo oppertunities.

One thing really bugs me. I heard they got rid of all kinds of air defense. Is this true? Not even air parries anymore?

I second this motion.

Third Strike is the defining fighter. But this is a nice effort also. Just not as DEEP.

Air blocking is off for sure. Air grabbing is off for most characters but some of them can do it (Chun-Li for example)

I don't know yet if some characters can do focus attacks in the air, so that counts something like air parrying. But probably not.

It's closer to SSF2T than on SFA3 and/or Third strike for example.

Third Strike is the defining fighter. But this is a nice effort also. Just not as DEEP.
Or, alternately, not as intimidating. I'd argue that 3rd Strike is too deep, at times, for the casual player, limiting the potential audience. I love the game, but I suck at it and always will because I don't have the time or energy. It's just too demanding.

Trying to get this game yesterday was a mad house. I like to support my local game stores like J&L and Video Games NY so I usually only purchase at these locations.

But Capcom decided to only hit off one store in the area with the game on time, of course a Gamestop.

So, I'll be picking up the game from VGNY this afternoon. I've played it in the arcades for a few months now, but I'll finally be getting to play at home tonight.

Street Fighter 3 TS is great and yes deeper than this game.. Got mine in 2001 I think. STF2HD remix might even be deeper than SF4 but hey all of these games are fun in different ways. Now how about Street Fighter 4 impressions.

Focus System :

The focus system is really fun and very much more available to everyone. The bar charges fast enough and it seems to be a really good system to create better close up fights. It allows for defensive and insane offensive moves as well as positioning. I really am not an "amazing" player but so far it seems to be like an advanced battle of rock-paper-scizzors until someone does a combo right through the "focus absorb". Each characters focus tech's are different and that makes it even more interesting. As time goes by I expect to see a whole lot of crazy focus technique strategies developed during online play.

Ultra Combo's :

These moves are really not to hard to do and dish out the serious damage. They are completely outrageous animations and basically a succession of the characters best moves. I haven't seen them all yet but Dictator and Cammy's rule!

that's why I'm more interested in 4 though. When i play a fighter i want to be able to play with my friends... in third strike a good player knows way too much to be beaten by a novice or even someone experienced in the genre.
Don't that just look oh so tasty?
