what in your opinion are the worst jrpgs

I thought Mana Khemia (apparently part of the Atelier world) was pretty fun. Its not mind blowing, and there is a TON of forced crafting, though the crafting is fairly simple and you don't have to grind for items much. The combat system was quite nice, a sort of evolution from FFX's party-swapping mechanic, where you now can combo into characters in your back row. Lots of neat spell and attack animations.

Like already said, definitely not for everyone, but for some reason the game lacking an "Atelier" title made me feel more comfortable just jumping in.

Despite what people may think, it's not exceptionally fanservicey or anything like that.

Rating board jokes aside, I never understood how people could make mountains out of mole hills with the 'fanservice' in these games. Just goes to show some people look at the anime art-style and just assume its content based on that alone.

But yeah, I'd say 'quaint' is the word to describe the games, it's the video game equivalent of sitting in a rocking chair and drinking tea while watching the sunset.

Well, Atelier Rorona on PS3 specifically. It kinda evokes the same feeling as, say, Flower.

Only other Atelier game I played is Iris on the PS2, which is more like a PS1 game such as Breath of Fire III.

Even though I've not played much of the others, I'd put money on Iris being one of the best we've gotten. It is indeed more like a PS1 RPG. The sequel is a'ight as well.

I've played a bit of Mana Khemia and Ar Tonelico. They both have some interesting stuff, and not so interesting stuff, but they play very similarly to Iris. I do like the magic-charging mechanic in Ar, but there's also some skeevy bits in that game, too.

It seems like Meruru would be a good choice too, as that's the third in the Arland series, of which Rorona and Totori are the first two.

I have the Arland series on Vita myself. I haven't played the PS3 versions, but Totori on Vita was a great experience and I doubt anything is lost on the handheld.

Its hard to come by a JRPG without at least a few redeeming qualities about the game in question. I really can't say I have played any utterly terrible ones but a few I did not like were:

Final Fantasy 5
Final Fantasy 13
Legend of Legaia
Golden Sun
Albert Odyssey (I actually found this one pretty charming and love it in my collection but it is as generic of an RPG as it gets)

Working Designs localized some great stuff, but also some surprisingly dull entries. Vay and Cosmic Fantasy 2 failed to wow me at all.

Anything with random encounters automatically starts out with a -1 penalty as far as I'm concerned. There are good JRPGs that feature them, but I still find it to be a highly annoying design choice.

It ruined Golden Sun on GBA for me, I got fed up with the encounters before I could get drawn into the story and characters.
