There was this awesome place I used to visit. What's it called? Rabbit Boy, or something like that. Dude wears these crazy goggles like he's in a video game. Anyway, the forums used to be pretty cool, but I think they closed up shop several years ago to go into make-up and clothes or something.

Or did I just imagine all that?

Yeah, if the VSav scene no longer exists, then I guess that makes me a unicorn.

It's not as big as I wish it was, for sure, but it still exists. By that notion, I wish the KOFXIII and SFxT scenes were also as big as they once were.

The only good games are dead ones.

Enemy Territory and Halo PC. Two of my favorite online games growing up - still two of my favorite multiplayer games. Met lots of long time online gaming friends through those, even if I don't talk to them that much anymore.

Enemy Territory is down to like sub-100 total players and they're all super hard core about it, all playing pro-mod. I enjoyed the chaotic nonsense in that game, especially on modded servers.

I don't know about Halo PC. I think with some work around there are still a decent number of people playing the Demo multiplayer, but Blood Gulch is a bit played out no?

Basically, insert any GameSpy based game here. That going down killed so many games and the ones it didn't had their communities basically eliminated overnight due to the hassles of finding ways of getting them back online.

Edit: At least Quake 3 is still alive through Quake Live.

I wouldn't even be so invested in the game as I am now if there wasn't a scene to help me learn the game like it did.
Vsav is quite active in SoCal and NorCal regions with weekly and bi-weekly tournaments that are broadcasted via stream. There was a recent tournament in NY alongside 3rd Strike. Monthly Fightcade tournaments for anyone around the world to participate in.
The game has been an Evo side tournament for the last 5 years with this year's top 8 getting stream time courtesy of MadCatz.
A tournament at CEOtaku this month in Florida.
it may not be as big out here as it is in Japan, bit the scene is out there.

I miss Dr. Gamewiz on AOL. That was probably the best place to go for games & advice. Every Monday night, the good Dr himself (an ex-Nintendo Power game counselor) and his buddy Ray Karnak would host trivia in their chat room. Lots of good people there. Learned a LOT about games there, especially stuff from the 3rd-5th gen (this was the late 90s).

AOL shut down his area around mid to late 1998, but he'd still continue to do his e-mail newsletters. The Dr passed away in 1999, not long after. Boolah, Doc. BOOLAH!

The NiGHTS into Dreams forums are pretty dead these days; it used to be a pretty great place and I wish it was still active. It still technically exists though. Same with The Will of the Ancients, the largest Panzer Dragoon community; though there have never been THAT many people on the PD forums.

Another place I miss is DDR Freak. It was never the greatest community, a lot of DDR players show too much one-upsmanship. But I liked being able to talk DDR with other people who were serious about the game! I think Bemani Style, a broader music game community still exists, but it's not the same.

I never posted on the Working Designs forums but I used to lurk and thought it was a cool place. The Gaijinworks forums might be similar but IMO isn't as interesting.

On a more localized level, I wish there was an "arcade scene" somewhere near me. I'd love to play 2D fighting games, DDR, or even pinball against someone in person.

DDR Freak was a good place to get the latest information about which arcades had the latest versions. When I first started playing, the NJ arcade scene was still a thing in 2002. The legendary 8 on the Break in Dunellen was the first place in the area to get DDRMAX2-7th. I drove down there to play it. They also had regional forums where they had a thread for nearly every arcade that had DDR. But in the years that followed, many of those NJ haunts I once frequented have closed down, and then in turn so did DDR Freak. Their step charts are still there and quite useful.

Crap I forgot Gaijinworks was former Working Designs, I mixed it up with MonkeyPaw, Vic's at gaijin right?

They both seem to be on the same wavelength anywhos.

I miss Sega Xtreme. I mostly just lurked there, but it was a really tight community. It was interesting to find out that this forums founders were mostly from there, and a lot of other early regulars came from SX too. Surprised nobody mentioned it.

I was also a member of some Castlevania communities, but they either withered or... got bad.

edit:
... WTF? It still exists and I'm a member who never posted a single message?
I must be trippin'
edit2: Mal and Racketboy have the most posts?
