Go check out http://www.avsforum.com/ it's a forum for AV geeks. They can point you towards the best deals and good tips.
Personally I have an Olivia brand 42" TV from Target and I like it. Many of the off brand TV's are just rebadged brand name units. So do your research and get something that's got lots of good reviews.

Re: Good HDTVS
Buy a first tier tv (panasonic, sony, samsung, hitachi, etc) as they will have the best panels, great warrenties, more options, as well as the best customer support. you can save 50 dollars now by buying an olevia, sylvania, magnavox, etc but will be dishing out more money when it fails. as to what a previous member said about rebadged units, that is true, to a point. an olevia is a rebadged sylvania, which itself is a crappy tv to begin with. if money is a constraint, think about getting a smaller, first tier tv rather than a larger off-brand.
my suggestions would be 32-inch lcds by panasonic or samsung. they both handle gaming well, and have excellent build quality. sony is a rebadged samsung, so you get great quality but pay for the name.
if you want a plasma, go with a 42-inch by panasonic or hitachi. they both actually share their plasma technology, and they are fantastic panels. you can actually pick up a 720p panasonic for 599 at some stores now!

I heard pioneer was one of the best to get right now, but that's just from one source
Re: Good HDTVS
I sold tv's for over a year. IMO the bravia's and samsungs are the best (at one point they were sharing factories and parts) I wouldn't buy an off brand though. The return rate/dead on arrival rate/repair rate etc were all very high. Picture might be close but quality (and style) isn't. There's a reason sony's tend to be heavier units. Man the markups on those offbrand tv's are huge to if its 700 bucks the store paid 200 if its a sony at 700 they paid about 650 (guess which one they'll push)
Re: Good HDTVS
That's a hard choice to make! From experience I disagree with the Olevia comments, I have two in my place and they've looked GREAT and worked great for a little over two years now while on the other hand the first Bravia in my living room died the week after I brought it home
. I really think it's a gamble, Just make sure you have a really good return policy/Warranty to fall back on wherever you buy your tv from!
PS. I've heard really good things about the new Samsungs, But if you hold off for a few months the new models will be out with some really great new features (LED lit LCDs look VERY nice!).

Re: Good HDTVS
My dad (who always does his research) surprised my wife and I with a 32" Philips LCD HDTV for Christmas last year. He told me he got it on Black Friday (so I'm assuming he scored it for under $500) and he said he chose it because it was "highly rated for the picture quality of standard definition content" (probably from Consumer Reports, which he subscribes to).
A year later and so far, it hasn't disappointed. SD content does look quite nice, sharp and vibrant for an LCD, and it features lots of image tweaking options. Not sure what size you're looking for for the bedroom, but if a budget 32-incher fits your bill, I'm very happy with the picture quality of my Philips.

"Oh, no, not in Utica, no. It's an Albany expression."
Re: Good HDTVS
I can't comment on HD TVs, but I tend to be pretty happy with the Philips products I buy.
