Favorite traditional mario.
Mario seems like the type of character that would be talked about a lot on these forums but really, he rarely comes up. So anyways, as I was watching the wizard last night, the movie reminded me about how awesome mario 3 was (also those kids suck at that game, watch it again, you'll see what I mean). For some reason, even though the series progressed and grew, it's always been about 3 for me. So I'm wondering, which one do you guys like the most? I excluded the 3d ones because they really are their own beast... If I forgot an entry, do tell, I'll be glad to add one.
Don't that just look oh so tasty?

Re: Favorite traditional mario.
I vote for the OG SMB.
I like the simple "get to the end of the stage safely" concept. As the series went on things got more complicated. At first I didn't mind it but all the extra crap became just that extra. It was fun to find secret stuff - but making a game that you can complete that is not really complete until you go back and get all the secret stuff by playing each level a zillion times is too much.
I was loving Wario World Shake It but I refused to move to the next level until I got all the secrets of the previous one for proper completeion... needless to say I now have gotten frustrated and bored and have moved on.
I wish it was just as simple as "get to the end of the stage safely" with hard ass levels instead of easy ones that you redo 100 times.

I personally loved Mario 3 above all of the rest. Something about it clicked with me, whether it be a fine balance of "get to the end of the level" and "neat secret areas and items", the fun gimmick levels (man I miss those airships), the power up suits or what, but I love this game to pieces.
SMW is a close second, but SMB3 is my fave by far.

I wanted to be a Teminator but they require you have an armored hyperalloy skeleton and mine's mostly recycled truck tires.

Definately Super Mario World, as it was the first console Mario I ever beat. The rest kept killing me.

Super Mario 3 is the pinnacle of platform games. Developers attempt to emulate and surpass the ultimate refinement and perfection that is SMB3. And they all fail.

Super Mario World/Super Mario Bros. 4 was great but not as good as Super Mario Bros. 3.
Re: Favorite traditional mario.
I would go so far as to say Super Mario Brothers 3 is probably one of the best video games every created and remains so today. The level design and balance is so carefully crafted that I think it withstands the test of time awfully well.
