MUGEN

Post by SpaceBooger »

Is it any good?
On youtube I saw a fan created marvel vs dc... and I was drooling.
I went to find more info and decided to ask you guys... because in my mame cabinet I have all of the KOF and street fighter games, I just am looking for something different featuring other characters -like dc comic ones
Is Mugen any good?
Where is the best place to get it?

thanks

I used to be very much into the MUGEN craze about 5 years ago. However, the community really went downhill in an extremely dramatic way. Many of the best authors starting going private only and it just became full of drama.

There are a few really good authors out there, but finding their stuff is going to be difficult. I used to use Mugenchina forums, I believe. Can't read a word, so it's kinda trial and error, but they were about the most well moderated board that was still alive; every other board was just pathetic. Felt like wadding through sewage to find diamonds.

Also, have to be aware that there is no enforced balance, and as a result, some characters will be god-awful cheap while others extremely underpowered. Some authors thought that having character that could kill others in one hit made them better some how, so watch out for that.

Seriously, you can have a good MUGEN set up, but there is a ton, and I mean A TON of crap out there.

Edit: Decided to look through my Mugen archive and tell you the authors that I tried to collect the most from:
warusaki3 (made a lot of characters with the CvS2 groove system, which was great fun. Also had Jojo's Bizarre Adventure characters and a few KOF characters),
muteki (Perfect renditions of the GGXX characters. Make sure you run MUGEN in Double Res to get the full impact),
Fervicante (Very hard to get a hold of, but had really good KOFXI renditions),
Juke Kisaragi (did quite a few of the SNK gals. Not super-awesome, but not bad either.),
Sander71113 (really awesome NeoGeo-era characters. Old, but classic, and he really pulled out every stop. Beware the AI, though; the AI was good enough that I set up Kyo and Iori to be mid-bosses.),
Jesuszilla (Did a CvS2 version of Felicia. That is enough of a reason for me.) and
Phantom.of.the.Server (Did a few SFA renditions that played in a very modern way. Lots of eye candy. Even did a Morrigan that I really liked.)

Btw, here's Buyog's page. http://www.buyog.com/MUGEN/ I wasn't extremely impressed with the Marvel vs DC project, but you could do a lot worse. And I do mean A LOT worse. I don't know how politically correct this is, but I found that most the Brazilian Mugen creations were horribly broken. Just stating a fact; you try having MB-02 in your roster and having fun at the same time.

This is pretty much all Mugen was ever good for:

-_-

Edit: How has this video not been removed from youtube? I'm surprised. I've seen more mild videos get axes for implied sex.

That... is pretty freakin' hilarious.

God knows how bad the community has descended into the crapper now. It's been 5 years, and I left about the same time the drama started. What was a great idea for fighting game fans has become an inside joke.

"This game is about as balanced as MUGEN." That's usually enough to completely dismiss a game.
"This game is about as graphically consistent as MUGEN." See Capcom Fighting Jam.

MUGEN is to fighting game fans what Daikatana is to FPS fans.

Its fun for entertainment only. For competitive play its very unbalanced. Its worth downloading just to see the innovative characters though. By the way Samara in King Of MUGEN 06 rules, and Moz, that video is fucking great but was a very unbalanced match.

Yeah, that was a damned hilarious video.

I remember getting into MUGEN about 10 years ago, since it was cool that you could combine a ton of characters together. Then I realized that it was unbalanced as all hell, and amused myself with the naked characters instead.

MUGEN is like any BYO game. The fact that anyone CAN make content in it means the quality of the content will run the gamut. I'm sure a carefully constructed collection of characters could indeed be both fun and relatively balanced, but who has the time to filter through the noise for signal?

Also, it's very disturbing how many other videos like that one are still on YouTube, including ones with little anime girls as the sexual objects. I'm fine with porn, but the rape and the child rape have got to get flushed out. People get arrested and sent to pound-me-in-the-ass prison for that crap.

I was a big mugen fan about 6 years ago, the mugen scene was awesome at that time, with new characetrs coming out every few days or so, everyone was exited and couldn't wait, i remember having about 80 characters to choose from..it was crazy. every character you can think of you can just download and add to your collection, Man did i love captain caveman.

You need to find a good site for mugen characters, i dont have any links anymore but just google it, you'll find something. It's really addicting to play and adding your own music / character is a plus. Maybe i'll get back into it someday, but who knows.

Yeah mugen was awesome when it first came out..... Then the Sephiroths, killer whales, and all 1 hko people started coming out then characters started to become wayyyyy too cheap. So then people had to compensate by making their characters stronger and stronger until it became too ridiculous. Its only good for a laugh and really isnt that deep of a fighting system as say street fighter or smash bros.

did anyone ever homebrew it on a console?

Most people i know that would be amused and enjoy it would never play a game on a computer screen.
