X-Box on HD LCD

Post by scottykick »

I know the original X-Box supports HD, but in general how do games look played on say a 40-50 inch 1080P LCD?

Go for the High Definition AV Pack, which is extremely hard to find in some stores but can be found at the usual places. OEM ones can cost you up to $30, but it is money well spent for resolution up to 1080i.

Most of the AAA titles (Halo 2, Ninja Gaiden, Fable etc.) display at 480p.

I have mine hooked with to a 37" LCD and the display is great - no ghosting, artefacting or color display issues.

I'm currently playing Beyond Good & Evil and it looks awesome.

most games look better but the ones that stand out are Doom 3 and Counter Strike. 720p goodness.

I could be mistaken, but I believe Ninja Gaiden Black also had a 720p mode. Made slightly obsolete with the PS3 remake.

very much so, especially since the remake can be found for 5 bucks fairly easy.

I'm wondering, has anyone run the HD pack on a modified xbox? How does XBMC look running in 720p?

XBMC has 720p skins, also 1080 I think, so it should look great. I'm not so certain about it's support for hd video files though.
A friend of mine runs his modded xbox on a 50 in 1080 screen with the hd video pack and it work pretty well. Just keep in mind that the majority of xbox games don't support hd resolutions.

My 32" LCD's native resolution is 720p, so while XBMC looks very sharp in 1080i, it runs a bit faster and smoother in 720p, which still looks lovely. XBMC can't play true HD video (the ol' XBox just doesn't have the horsepower) but it does upscale DVDs up to 1080i, and video files streamed from your computer generally look just as good as they would on your monitor.

What I love about my modded XBox is how great the emulators look on my HDTV. You can output at any resolution you want, but the higher you go, the smaller the actual picture will be (sounds weird, but it makes sense if you think about it), so 480p is usually best. I'm usually a proponent of playing classic games on original hardware, but if you no longer have a CRT television, emulating them on a modded XBox is hands-down the best way to make them look good on an HDTV.

XBMC on 1080i is a bit slow, looks beautiful on 720p as stated before. I used two different brand component video cables on a 24", don't know if the ms high definition av pack would boost a difference.
