Don't mix your NTSC/J, NTSC/U or PAL consoles together at all. Not even their peripherals (like hard drives or memory cards).

I just discovered that my NTSC/J console was flashed into an NTSC/U region console by Microsoft, without being connected to the internet. I've been switching the HDD between consoles. I've got a post on the SHMUP forums where I am warning others and gathering concrete information on how it happened - unfortunately, this may mean that someone else will have to get their console messed up for us to figure it out for sure. I hope not.

That's why I implore every Japanese console owner to keep their profile, their hard drive, and their American games away from their console until we know how this happens. In the event someone at the SHMUP forums can provide some insight, here is my original thread.

Holy crap that sucks, real sorry to hear that man - I was thinking of getting a JP arcade model, but now i'll definetly hold off buying one. It's irritating that so many awesome shmups are coming to the 360 as the console is turning out to be one of the most awkward when it comes to importing - obviousley the region-free PS3 would be ideal for importers (although probably not the developers), but even the Wii wouldn't pose half as much of a problem as the 360.

Very strange Rack, I have played us and J games in mine without issue it is however not on live or online, nor have I switched the HDD, though I was thinking about selling my US 360 and doing so, which now I may have to rethink. None of my original x-box games would work at all on my J-360 period. I hope this was a fluke, call MS.

you could always just give the big middle finger to region protection and mod it.

you can get away with that I assume, correct?

Terribly sorry about this happening to you, mate.

What I don't get (obviously) is...why have we not heard of this before? There must be lots of gaijin who have imported or bought theirs in Japan...actually there are probably a bunch of Japanese chaps who come to school in the States and bring their console with them, yes?

Is it an original Xbox game? How did you get the update for the game onto your console, via disc I guess? Now, does anybody know if the backwards compatibility list is the exact same list for both consoles? Does anybody know if original JP Xbox games work on a US console?

 Better yet, will using a JP hard drive and playing a JP original Xbox game on my US console make it a JP console? Certainly not, right? But then, what happened?

Well, there's nothing illegal about owning a Japanese Xbox360 in the US, so I'd say call MS about it. They can refuse to support it, and that's fine, but it's not like they can legally punish you in any way.

I have been swapping HDD as well as a few of my friends from our USA to Jap 360 with no problem. I even connect them to the internet when I play. How would they flash to USA?

Just seems weird to me. The region is based on your DVD drive bios. I have been swapping HDD for over 2 years now.

Well, the thing went tits up with RROD, so I guess when there is smoke, there is a fire. I suppose I'll just keep my next console isolated to be certain. I have no idea why it exhibited the behavior it did before it died, but I definitely don't want to mess with another one. :(
