Price question: Powerbook G4 Aluminum 17"
Is 600 dollars a fair price for one? Just curious because my dad is in need of a new computer and loves to use photoshop as well as have lots of space to work on the go or otherwise and I thought it would make a good x-mas/birthday present for him.

Assuming the battery isn't totally worthless and the HD still has some life left it isn't the worst price I've seen. Given the age of the machine, though, and that it won't run the latest OS or software, you might wanna try and talk the price down some more. I wouldn't pay more than $500, if even that, if I didn't have to.

You are better off buying a cheap PC and using your license of photoshop. I have a G4 and it barely rolls along these days, excluding internet use.

The battery is brand new and the HDD is fine. It also comes loaded w/ extra software that the seller has gotten over the years (Final Cut Pro, Quake 4, Doom 3, Photoshop CS 3,and a whole load of other games and apps)marurun wrote:Assuming the battery isn't totally worthless and the HD still has some life left it isn't the worst price I've seen. It runs PPC versions of Mac OSX. I had a G3 that ran it just fine, I think a G4 can.marurun wrote:Assuming the battery isn't totally worthless and the HD still has some life left it isn't the worst price I've seen. No, the latest OS X revision (10.5, Leopard) does not include proper support for the G3 processor. Minimum requirements are an 867 G4. Rumor is that Snow Leopard may cut out all G4 support, or possibly all PPC support. And much new software is being designed Intel only. So that's a limitation.
Also, here's background information on the Powerbook G4 series:

It uses DDR RAM, not DDR2.
