Hacked invision board...

Any of you guys out there who've dealt with invisionboard or similar php forum dealy's.

A friend of mine hosts a very active forum and website. He has been running it on a hacked copy of invisionboard for quite sometime and of course, like I warned him, his board has been hacked profusely.

I told him he should buy a license and finally he agreed. His problem is he has NO idea how to upgrade it and worse yet he doesn't know what will happen between him and invisionboard when he tries to upgrade it in the legal sense.

So my question is... is it that difficult to upgrade to a legite license without losing all the content already present?
