Fallout 3 is awesome
Fallout 3 is awesome
I can't stop playing this game and I hate FPSs. The V.A.T.S combat system is fucking great, the open world feeling is awesome and the feeling of desperation never goes away. You always feel your struggling to survive. If you like Elder Scrolls you will like this. I see myself playing this for a very longtime. My poor wife and kid, they will be missed dearly during my play through.
Re: Fallout 3 is awesome
I got bored in 10 hours, and very annoyed at the illogical VATS system and how the AP meter seems to have no relation to the realtime combat of just playing it like an FPS. It seemed more like a wait time between simply letting the computer aim for you, which...is just stupid. The cinematic camera angles are nice but that's it.
The rest of the game I just found to be repetitive as well. It suffers from most of the same flaws that Oblivion had. I just feel no motive to explore at all.

Re: Fallout 3 is awesome
the weird thing about fallout 3 for me is the fact that i hate the morrowind series, but love the bethesda revamp of fallout. I agree, in oblivion, i too had no motivation to explore, but with the change in setting, the addition of guns, and a unique battle system, i found the game to be quite enjoyable and can't believe how much there is to do in the game.
i agree the targeting system can break up the pacing and fighting in the game, but i liked how it mixed fps with an almost turn based style of rpg
overall, its been my favorite game this year

I so want to play this. But I either need a new PC or a 360. I think a 360 would be cheaper.
Re: Fallout 3 is awesome
I too hated Oblivion (actually all the Bethesda RPGs!). For reasons why, you can read my article on the 'nu-huge' genre here:
http://gamesblog.nucleus-soundlab.com/B ... menon.html
But Fallout is an incredible game. Bethesda actually studied the original Fallout games, which are damn near the best CRPGs ever made, and combined that with some of the best qualities in their own RPGs.
The VATS system is awesome. Yeah, it doesn't make total sense why you can use all your AP and then keep shooting in real-time. But it works, and its really fun. Combat is 100x more fun than Oblivion.
Exploring the world is just fun all in itself. I never found anything very interesting exploring off the paths in Oblivion (more demon gates leading to cookie-cutter quests? ugh), but I've found some damn cool quests just messing around in the landscape of Fallout.
I can only say for sure once finishing it, but overall its surely one of the best next-gen RPGs so far. And happily, its selling incredibly well - so maybe we'll see a Fallout 4.

Its a great game but somehow i just lost complete intrest like halfway through. Huge world but i remember this graphical glitch where i would walk and like flat pieces of triangles connect to my gun to the sky. Then it became unplayable.

Re: Fallout 3 is awesome
^What version were you playing? This doesn't sound very normal to me.
The game is pretty good, amazing setting but I found it somewhat repetitive dungeon-wise. I later discovered that ruins are that similar in real life too so I guess it couldn't be really helped. The plot is nothing spectacular except for some parts where it's totally awesome (The Life Simulation for example).
The combat is weird, not because of the VATS system but because of the game's difficulty IMHO. There are not a lot of enemies and individual enemies pose no threat as you can just run. However 3 enemies can kill you in mere seconds as you don't resist a lot of shots and some baddies have rocket launchers (And man, they really hurt). I think the game would have been better with some more weaker enemies around as the line between "piece of cake" and "you die" is too small. It's not exactly realistic nor unbalanced and takes time to get used to it. In the end I used one stimulant for each 3 enemies if I remember correctly a pretty high number and not because I sucked but because of what I said above.
I think if you enjoy exploring and questing and getting the most of each game you will love Fallout 3. If not it may dissapoint you as it doesn't charm you as much as it may seem so you may like it but do not feel so temped to play it.
Setting the animations aside (The blood spills suck ass) I think the fault of the game is lacking some charm. It is a really good game but it is kind of plain, IMHO.

Re: Fallout 3 is awesome
Been playing it since January, little by little. Really like it. Never played Oblivion but plan to go back to it once I finish this and some other games. I was never interested in the ES games, either, but this makes me want to go at least give Oblivion a shot.
Re: Fallout 3 is awesome
Oblivion was ok, but I would recommend Morrowind and its expansions over it. Even though the world is smaller, and the game suffers a few problems, it just felt much more immersive to me, and I know I'm not the only one.RadarScope1 wrote:Been playing it since January, little by little.
