Shenmue playthrough

Post by Incognito D »

Hey everyone, I've been a visitor to this site since the start of summer but I finally got round to register...

anyway, hope this is in the correct place. One of my favourite games ever is Shenmue. And i just realised, it's the start of December so I plan to play through Shenmue bit by bit this month and into January with every day in the game corresponding to the same day in real life.

I already played through it once this year but who cares? I just love this game so much.

I better get cracking. I believe the game starts on November 29th (the opening movie anyway) so I might have a wee bit catching up to do.

Anyone else want to join me in this venture?

But each Shenmue day only takes like, 12 minutes. That's not enough playtime for one day!

I'll play through it, but I'm not going to stick to that draconian schedule. How's that?

It'll be weird but I don't think it'll be that much of a problem. It won't get in the way of the other games that I'm trying to get through at the moment, plus I've played it through a couple of times before so this will add a new slant to it :)

I think by an almost fateful stroke of luck that the days of the week have matched up as well. So not only will tomorrow be the 3rd of December both in game and in real life but they'll also both be Wednesday 3rd December!

The only problem I can see arising is if I don't manage to sneak into the warehouse on the first attempt and have to come back the next day and so on and so on... but I'll meet that problem when I come to it!

edit: I've been playing through it for a few days now and the days are a lot longer than 12 minutes each. I'd say they're closer to about an hour.

i actually prefer not getting into the warehouse right away that way that guy with the big hairdoo helps (been awhile since i played) you in with a funny cutscene.

Yeah I know the bit you mean. I've never actually seen it in-game but I saw it up on Youtube.

For the record, I finished it last night. Started on the 3rd of December, finished on the 21st - playing each day as it came in real life.

Pretty cool. I've got 2 other ideas for playing it through again:

- A "see everything" playthrough
- A speedrun

For the "see everything" playthrough I'm going to use a walkthrough to make sure that I get all the events and cutscenes that I've never seen in my previous playthroughs.

For the speedrun I'm going to see what day in-game is the earliest possible that I can get Ryo to leave for Hong Kong. I don't think I'll be able to make it much earlier than December 21 however, as this playthrough was fairly quick as I knew where I was going.

All in all, the second time I've completed Shenmue this year. Such a great game.

I've played shenmue once. It wasn't all at one time though. Maybe this might get picked up for Together Retro.
