I have read that some people buy the Saturn thinking it is a Model 2 because of the round buttons, but it turns out to have the 64-pin chip. Is there a certain model number that best to look for? Many of the Saturns I have found have the model # MK-80000A. Is this one the good one for a mod chip?
Thanks

Re: American Saturn model number question
My oval button Saturn has the model number MK-80000 and my round button (which I installed a mod chip on) has the model number MK-80000A. According to Wikipedia, there's another round button model MK-80001 that was manufactured after my MK-80000A model that changed some jumper locations.
Maybe some one will know otherwise but I'm sure both model round button consoles will take the mod chip the same. But the round button MK-80000A is the one I have and have installed the mod chip on, and can confirm that it's a model to get if you want to mod.

Re: American Saturn model number question
a lot of 64 pin model 2's won't chip. I went through three of them that wouldn't work with a chip, and the first and only 32 pin model 2 i found is working fine with the chip i tried in all the 64's. Some people have working 64 pin model 2's, but I was never so lucky. according to http://www.angelfire.com/pa/Raluminat/saturnmod.html , you've got a 65% chance.
I kept a 64 and of course the 32, but both have MK-80000A model numbers. Luckily i know the guys who run my local used game store, and they let me open up a couple so i could buy the one i needed.

Need FreeMCboot? I'll install it on your PS2 Memory Card for free if you cover postage both ways.

I've gotta bump this thread.
My Saturn is a round button MK-80000A. Can I use the mod chip sold in the racket boy store?
I can follow most of the tutorial posted here but:

...my saturn is slightly different. Where as the circuit board on the right(in that pic) appears to be raised and exposed mine is submerged and not as easy to access.

That spot on the right is about 1/4 to 1/2 down inside the metal shielding as far as I recall from doing mine. Although if you notice that pic is a white Saturn, not a US one. Got a picture of yours in tha area so we can help out better?BigTinz wrote:I've gotta bump this thread.

Re: American Saturn model number question
looks like the 32pin IC to me, you should be on easy street. if you can solder bridge the two points (A+B) on the chip and get yourself a power wire soldered in, it's plug and play from there.
make sure you get an action replay for imports, it's much easier than wiring in region switches like I used to. region and copy protection were two seperate beasts to defeat on the good 'ol saturn.
this link from one of my above posts has excellent instructions for the different models. I suggest checking out http://www.angelfire.com/pa/Raluminat/saturnmod.html

Re: American Saturn model number question
I agree with Skate, looks like you're on easy street for a modchip with an A to B solder, power wire, plug and go.
*edit
To make my chip nice and modular, I put a spade lug on the power with one one leg cut off so I could push that in the slot between the pin and clamp for power.

Ok. this tut: http://www.angelfire.com/pa/Raluminat/model232.html seems pretty easy!
Hobie, are you saying that you place that lug "in" the same area as show in step 4...as opposed to just putting the wire there?
