whats up with the dreamcast controlers cord?

Post by weasels »

OK so i was just thinking about this now. i don't know why it just dawned on me now but what the hell is up with the cord coming twords you on a dreamcast controller. i'm pretty sure it was to make it look different and appealing but i would think it would just damage the cord quicker because its always bending. i do realize that theres a notch to put the cord in so its facing the system but that bends the cord even more. i personaly don't give a care any more about it and thought it was neat when i first saw it as a kid, but i wanted to see what everyone thought on the design or knew about the reason sega did this. ^^

I've brought this up before and I'm guessing they did this because of the vmu slots being in front.

I like it. The weight of the cord somehow encourages me to hold the controller at a more proper 45 degree angle. My wrists hurt after playing with any controller for more than a couple hours, but I never had that issue on dreamcast.

I was only throwing my vote in for Dreamcast's unorthodox cord placement. Your super-wrists are no concern of mine.

I never found an issue with the DC controller. It made me hold it how Moz describes.

The main reason the cable protrudes from the bottom is due to the placement of the IC board. Open up a DC controller and you will understand why the cord is at the bottom.

The DC cables are pretty sturdy things anyway so I doubt they would break from just being bent slightly back.

The cable at the bottom of the controller makes tonnes of sense when you look at the fishing controller. If it was at the top, whenever you got a bite you'd yank the damn thing right out of the system. As it is, whenever you yank the controller you're increasing the slack on the cable.

So the cable at the bottom is either a happy accident, or somebody at Sega's design HQ was a little too smart for his own good :P.
