Master System

Post by silverback »

well the joy bringer that is ebay brought me 2 master system 2's the other day. 1 power supply, 1 rf lead and box (which needs the lead soldering back in), 2 controllers and 5 games.

Both work, one has Alex Kidd built in and the other has Sonic built in.

I have already got most of the bits I need to RGB and 50/60Hz mod the two of them, I will hopefully get the rest of the bits needed by monday at the latest.

The 50/60 and RGB mods are something I insist upon after modding my Megadrive, the difference is amazing and once you do it you can't go back.

Anyway which system is the rarer? I would say the Sonic version as from my childhood I can only remember playing Alex Kidd as the built in game. But I would like some definate info on which was rarer if anyone has it?

The older Master System 1 system had different built-in games depending on which year you bought the system. If I recall correctly, there were versions with: Astro Warrior, Hang-On + Safari Hunt, Snail Maze and Alex Kidd in Miracle World.

The first built-in Master System game was Snail Maze, then Safari Hunt + Hang-On. Astro Warrior is probably the rarer one of the bunch. Alex Kidd was the mascot right before Sonic.
Popular Systems not owned: Neo-Geo / CD(Z), Multi-Mega(CDX), Megadrive 3, Wii, PSP, TurboExpress, SNES2, MegaCD1

all that is common knowledge and didn't answer my question.

All mk1 master systems had snail mnaze in them, the master system 2's didn't sadly.

I don't have any fact to back it up, but I'd have to agree with you on the above.

The "Alex Kidd" version was the first of the SMS2 consoles, and I would say at the peak of it's sales. Of the few dozen consoles I've modded (and the 4 I own), they all come packaged with Alex Kidd.

I definitely saw the Sonic versions for sale back in the day, but I think they were around during the decline of 8 bit when most people were already onto the SNES and MegaDrive/Genesis.

Thats what I think.

The issue is which one do I keep and which one do I sell on?

I need to get rid of my duplicate consoles (baby due in 7 weeks).

I would rather keep the rarer one, but tbh I think I will lose either way as I have a sonic cartridge so that means I could play sonic on the MS if I wanted to but not got alex kidd and tbh I can't recall ever seeing one for sale!
