Ive been playing video games with my little sister lately. Since shes a young one with very little co-ordination. Ive mostly been playing platformers with her (thats where we all started isnt it?). Replaying my old favourites, super mario world, Sonic the hedgehog, and Donkey Kong Country. After completing them, i realized: either im damn good. or these arent as tricky as i remember them being 13+ years ago (With an exception for some levels that will forever require me to be on my A-game).
I digress. Can I get a list of some trickier platformers that focus on maneuvering over action? 2d, or 3d.
Consoles i have: Genesis, SNES, Dreamcast, PS2, Xbox, Gamecube

Re: Quench my platform gaming thirst
I've often considered platformers the most important genre of gaming. Super Mario Bros. pretty much saved the gaming industry and is one game EVERYONE knows about. Many of the industry's biggest icons came from platform games. Sonic, Mario, Lara Croft(yes, platforming figures heavily in Tomb Raider games)RemyC wrote:Ive mostly been playing platformers with her (thats where we all started isnt it?).
Not sure what to recommend to you though. You said you want games that focus on maneuvering rather than action. Most of the harder platformers I can think of feature a fair amount of action. Platforming alone doesn't pose much of a challenge to me, but when you factor in enemies attacking while you're hopping form platform to platform things get hard. Games like Castlevania, Mega Man and Ninja Gaiden all come to mind
Wait a sec, try this:

Re: Quench my platform gaming thirst
There's a ton of challenging platformers for the NES and various handheld systems, but I don't have many suggestions for the consoles you have that aren't action-based that haven't already been named.
The one that sticks out is Earthworm Jim for the SNES; it's unusual and throws a pretty good variety of challenges at the player so that you're not just running around and shooting things all the time.
However, if you're up for platformers on a PC, I've got one big recommendation: Jetpack. It's all about maneuvering, and there's a built-in level editor if the 100 levels it comes with aren't challenging enough for you. You can download it for free here:
http://www.adeptsoftware.com/jetpack/
I'd also suggest Prince of Persia; that's a classic, challenging platformer that got ported to all kinds of systems, though I can't speak for the quality of any version other than the PC one.
And, if you're willing to wait indefinitely, I've got a homebrew Super Mario World I've been working on sporadically for about six years that'll give you a headache... if it isn't obsolete by the time I finish it.

Re: Quench my platform gaming thirst
try the first crash bandicoot for ps1 its hardcore if you try to 100% it.
Re: Quench my platform gaming thirst
one of the best and hardest is the original Rayman for PSX..
I've got no signature.
Re: Quench my platform gaming thirst
I think Aladdin for the Genesis is a tough game. I've never been able to beat it, but it's good enough that I come back for more.
Re: Quench my platform gaming thirst
Raztat listed most of the great Genesis platformers, but I'll add:
ToeJam & Earl II
Earthworm Jim 1-2
Mickey Mouse: World of Illusion (co-op)
X-Men 2: Clone Wars (co-op).
I've actually found quite a few good NES platformers - some that come to mind are:
Little Samson - a little known gem. I very rarely see it get a mention but I thoroughly enjoy it.
Kirby's Adventure
Adventure Island 1-4
Rygar
Kabuki Quantum Fighter
Anything with Ninja in the title
... and although I didn't like it when I last played it, you'll probably like Castlevania. Everyone else does. After having some fun with Master of Darkness - Castlevania clone - I'll be playing this again soon to see if I can get some enjoyment out of it.
Master System:
Wonderboy series - just take in mind the first is the only pure platformer
Psycho Fox
Alex Kidd in Miracle World + in Shinobi World
Sonic the Hedgehog 1-2 (not just an 8-bit downgrade)
Ninja Gaiden
Rastan
... and if you like Castlevania, Master of Darkness is certainly a must-have.
That's all I can think of. All in all, I'd say the Genesis the best place to turn to for platforming.

Re: Quench my platform gaming thirst
I just got done playing Croc on the PS1. It's pretty fun, and mostly consists of actual platforming as apposed to action elements. I also second the Crash Bandicoot series (the PS1 games at least).
Anyone here play I-Ninja? That's a good one too IMO.

I-Ninja is an amazing platformer I love that game.
