Topic. I'm a little tired of uninspired sound design. I want to find a shooter ("shmup") that has:
-different and distinctive sounds for each enemy/weapon...not just "pew pew"
-satisfying explosions of all sizes and duration
-boss sounds that truly make the fights special
-powerup/extend sounds that make you go "YES"
-truly new and creative sounds made either digitally or by processing natural sounds
-huge explosions that will rattle a player's junk
I want to play a game where the music can be turned off because the sounds are all you need. (On a side note, I wish more commercially available shooters allowed you to play without music.)
Any suggestions?

Both Rez and Tempest 2000 both have great music in my opinion.

Have you looked into Everyday Shooter?
Jonathan Mak has some excellent concepts in regards to the music.

Hey guys i am pretty sure he knows those games have good music. but he was talking about good sound effects and sound design. i really liked triggerheart excelica with all the explosions and smashing sounds when you used the tether to grab and swing them around. but i think for the most part the bullet sounds and explosions are pretty repetative and uninspired. i do like when they incorparate the backround elements into the sound like in the train level on robo aleste.

i think Ikaruga had the sweetest explosion sounds,
i also think, although i love the game that Silpheed had the worst sounds.

Those are all fine in the sound department, I guess. I think I want a shooter to have extremely satisfying sounds like in Gunstar Heroes or Ninja Gaiden or Guilty Gear; something very special and inventive.
Battle Garegga is pretty good for sound.

Unfortunately, nothing really sticks out for me. The music is what gets me pumped. The few games which come to mind...
Ikaruga, of course. The boss music gets my adrenaline pumping really quick! It's rather grandiose and dramatic.
Karous. The mix of drum & bass & hardcore & industrial which make up the pieces help keep me going at this one. Breakcore, as been mentioned before.
Senko no Ronde. Much more laid back than the previous soundtracks, but they help me get in the zone, so to speak. Very muted techno with jazz and trance influences throughout.
When I think of a shoot 'em up with notable sounds effects, I'll get back to you...

Notta shooter...but Shinobi III, had some killer sounds. Especially when you defeat a boss. They go, "MWEHHH"

Only shmups that was memorable with sound for me is Under Defeat. I just cannot get enough to the point that I hooked it up to a receiver and subwoofer just to hear the thunderous explosions. Pure acoustic bliss!!!
