So this weekend I ended up buying a PS3, almost in impulse. I rarely do things like that but I felt it had a lot of advantages to it. I bought a 60GB model so I got the Playstation 1 and 2 compatibility (which works for everything I own but Outrun 2006 and SNK Vs Capcom), and it has a lot of nice features like free online, wireless controllers you can charge with the system itself, background downloading etc.
While I really like the console itself, I'm starting to have niggling doubts about wherever or not I'm going to get much fun out of it. I've downloaded tons of demos but once I get over the graphics I haven't found a game that has truly blown me away yet (except maybe a Naruto fighting one, I liked that a lot) and the games I do want are mostly games I've played before with prettier visuals like Street Fighter IV. Even LittleBigPlanet doesn't excite me that much: outside of the customization it looks like a pretty average platformer. Also: TGS has so far brought quite a few exciting Wii games but er...nothing for the PS3 I didn't already know about at all.
Games so far have ranged from 'meh, it looks good but thats about it' to 'it's beautiful but it doesn't want me to enjoy it'. Case in point: Uncharted. The exploration of tombs and jungles is brilliant, but then the combat is a cumbersome mess and so unfairly matched it's ridiculous. When you only have ten bullets and a swarm of enemies from every angle are shooting you with a infinite supply of bullets, I don't see how that is fun at all. Same with the Bioshock demo: an amazing atmosphere but I can't really get into it when they throw enemies at you out of no where and kill you off before you can figure what button does what. Then there's Ridge Racer 7 and sega Rally which I also bought, which are alright, but nothing too exciting.
Am I wasting my time? It's a shame because I really like the console itself and it's features but the games have been pretty disappointing so far (although it has only been a week). I'm weird in that some systems don't rub off on me. I bought an X-Box once cheap and didn't like that much at all, it ended up becoming nothing more than a Jet Set Radio Future player, and even that I couldn't me motivated to play because I hated the controller. At least in case I like the system design, layout and controller, but then again in this case we're talking more like £300 rater than £30, I even got a 2 year guarantee.
Would I regret selling it down the line if I decided to? Would the X-Box 360 be any different? Should I just stick to my cheap and cheerful PS2? Ugh.
New PS3 owner, pretty dissatisfied
Re: New PS3 owner, pretty dissatisfied
I've been pretty unimpressed by this generation of consoles so far. The two only games I want to play are MGS4 and Yakuza 3. I suppose things could pick up this time next year (most important titles are multiplatform and already available for the PC).. Value-wise the 360 is top dog, unless you want HD playback then the PS3 is the obvious choice. I'm waiting to see whether the Japanese show ample support for the PS3, but things are different nowadays thanks to the cumbersome design process (which is going to make exclusive development something of the past, eventually), not to mention the hefty entry cost. Nintendo are laughing at the "hardcore" market alright.

I love uncharted, ive beaten it twice. But so far that is game that makes the system. I currently own, heavenly sword, guitar hero (aerosmith edition), uncharted, motorstorm and handful of psn games (shmups mostly). I sometimes wonder if i shouldn't have boughten a xbox 360 myself. I dunno look at the games that are available for it and look at what the ps3 has. It's totally up to you if you want to keep it. Our opinion shouldnt matter really.

In Uncharted they were going for SURVIVAL. In all but the easiest difficulty you will be stressed for ammo. Have you tried Warhawk?
Older. Not wiser.
Re: New PS3 owner, pretty dissatisfied
VF4 was among the reasons I preferred PS2 over XBox, but it was also my last VF since one-on-one beat'em ups require high overhead in terms of practice and challenge, as opposed to the simpler mechanics of a brawler like Yakuza.
This generation is indeed different with the crossover with the PC and between the "smaller big two" themselves, the disparity between PS3/360 and Wii and the Japanese being caught off guard with premature HD and multicore bullsh!t, one cannot be blamed for making the "wrong" choice. So why bother thinking too much about it.

Re: New PS3 owner, pretty dissatisfied
This hardcore/casual bullshit means nothing to me, I just want games I am going to enjoy and so far the Wii has had far more interesting stuff for me personally. It's telling that I've been playing Boom Blox recently more than everything I have on the PS3 so far combined.
Also, wasn't aware there was different difficulty settings in Uncharted, can you change the setting if you have already started a game? Oh, and I haven't got Virtua Fighter 5 yet, but I'm a little gutted that I'd have to spend another £70-100 just to get a good arcade stick for it. Somehow I doubt warhawk is my kind of thing, like a majority of the shooting games out there at the moment.

Re: New PS3 owner, pretty dissatisfied
You know, personally ive totally outgrown fighting games. The last one i bought was virtua fighter 2 for the saturn. I dont see the point to them. Even if VF5 is $5 used, its a waste to me. I dont enjoy those games anymore. Give me something new.
Re: New PS3 owner, pretty dissatisfied
Well personally for me the arrival of Street fighter IV and the new KOF is the main wants coming soon on the system, and I hope it might also get VF5R with online play too. Other than that so far the system seems to be mainly quite good for racing games, but not a lot else that I particularly like. I like simple arcade style games I can get into pretty quickly but have good depth, rather than all these 'epic' large games that take 50 hours to beat and require a bunch of tutorials just to figure it out.
Re: New PS3 owner, pretty dissatisfied
I bought my PS3 to put into a Arcade cabinet and to watch Transformers the Animated Movie on Blu-Ray
I have succeeded and will buy every Arcade port coming out on PS3.
Tekken 6, BlazeBlue, and Street Fighter 4 are on their way.
I will tell you though if it was the only console I owned I would be pretty sad myself. I prefer Dreamcast even until this day.
