Question About Dragon Slayer Legend of Heroes I & II (MD)

Post by mobiusclimber »

I recently bought both Dragon Slayer Legend of Heroes I and II for the Japanese Sega Mega Drive thinking I could use the Game Genie to play it on a Genesis. Unfortunately, they have region lockout. Does anyone have Game Genie codes to bypass the region lockout? I'm dying to play these games! :)

From Wikipedia:

"In addition, Japanese Megadrive cartridges (which do not contain an internal region lockout) can be played without a converter or modification, as the cartridge slot, which is the same shape as the original Japanese console, allows for these cartridges to be inserted freely."

Apparently that's if you're using a Genesis 3. But who knows if that will work.

Ok, having checked...gamegenie.com, GameFAQS, AtariAge, DigitPress, Racketboy, Whip Ass Gaming(don't ask), Genesis Project, 1Up.com's Official Mega Drive club...most places don't seem to think this game included any kind of region lockout. There's not a translated ROM either(and for the record, apparently both titles ROMs have problems). I just got a link to see an expanded list of games with region lockout(it's the one that has been making the rounds on the internet, Dragon Slayer is not mentioned), but unfortunately the expanded list was located on Lik-Sang... In the meantime I somehow ended up on trademe.co.nz looking at an auction for a code book from God knows when. Oh, and Megadrivemuseum.com doesn't even think the game exists, along with about a dozen or so other websites I checked.

Here's something that might help:

Mega Key/Super Key
------------------

Both of these devices are passthrough cartridges that have several DIP
switches that allow the user to select the country and/or video format
that the game detects upon bootup. The Mega Key only has switches for
country selection, while the Super Key has the addition of a PAL/NTSC switch
for games that have a lockout based on the video format. Setting the
country switch to Japan, for example, would make a Japanese game with
territory lockout think it's being run on a Japanese system and therefore
function
normally.

Look, after searching for a good long while on this one, all I can say is that the general internet doesn't seem to have a clue. Most suggestions I saw were to buy a JP Mega Drive or mod your own if you've got a soldering iron and a nearby Radioshack.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

That's for spending so long researching that at least! I did my own search to but couldn't find anything and kept running into info on the Legend of Heroes games for the PSP. XD It's definitely region-lockedout, I get a specific message telling me the game is only playable on a Japanese Mega Drive or words to that effect (don't remember the exact wording). I will just have to look into region modding a Genny I guess. (I use a Sega CDX, not about to put a toggle switch on that!) Thanks again.

Yeah, I tried again today, but no luck. Actually on a funny note, I found your posts on Eidolon's Inn and Print Page, specifically the one where you were told to come here...

It was PCEngineFx forum where they told me to come here. And Eidolon's doesn't even have any reply to it at all last I checked. XD I'm just going to give up for now. I'm looking into getting a Mega Drive, but the other option (which would make the Mega Drives into mere collector's items) would be to get the Turbo CD version... I think that's only the first one tho, not LoH II. And it's pretty darned expensive. But at least it would be in English.

Funny, the whole reason I bought these two games was b/c I got Devil Hunter Yohko for the Mega Drive, plugged it into a Game Genie and it worked fine. Stupidly, I thought they all would. I should have done some research first. XD

Nah, it's ok. Honestly there really aren't many websites that list Dragon Slayer as having region lockout at all. It's usually left out of the list.

Yeah but I think the one hardware faq on gamefaqs says that just about every game after a certain year (would have to go back and check what year it was) had region lockout, so it's a simple matter of figuring out what year the games were released in. XD

1993 and 1994, I believe, though I read somewhere else that they had given up after a certain point. Oh well, who knows...
