The Best Freeware Games
The Best Freeware Games
Okay, so we all know that video games can be pretty expensive. But for all of the great console and PC games out there, there's also a number of high quality games that are FREE and LEGAL for download, some of which are every bit as good as their console brethern. So, do you have any freeware games you love? Which do you enjoy the most?
Personally, I still stand by Cave Story being the finest freeware game of all time. Lengthy 2D Metroid/Castletroid type of game with 8-bit styled graphics, great atmosphere, multiple endings, and all of it made by one guy. Fantastic and I can't recommend it enough.

Other then that, I've been downright addicted to this puzzle game called Blocksum. It's a tetris-ish game where there are squares with numbers on them rising from the bottom of the screen. You can combine any number of them together to increase their value. When you connect a number of squares equal to the number inside them, they flash, giving you time to build up bigger score, then disappear. Great fun.

Pixel, the guy who made Cave Story, also did another pretty fun (though shorter) platformer called Ikachan, playing as a squid.

Check these games out, I'll be posting more games later tonight. Do YOU have some faves you'd like to share?

I wanted to be a Teminator but they require you have an armored hyperalloy skeleton and mine's mostly recycled truck tires.

My pick is still SorR, which is a remake as well. I'm yet to come across an original concept that will sway me from franchised titles, so remakes are more like my thing.

It's an oldie but Dink Smallwood was pretty cool. I haven't played it in a LONG time so there may be updates.

Nethack, easily the richest, most complex RPG ever written. One of the most difficult and unforgiving either. It took me over 4 years of playing before I finally beat it.
For something more arcadey, check out the shooters from aba games: http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~cs8k-cyu/index_e.html
I like rRootage, and Torus Trooper especially. Especially nice, they run on Linux too.

I really enjoyed the Flash version of Portal.

Echoes was a lot of fun, and I think it has it's own thread.

Cave Story is my personal favorite, and Knytt is another good one. It's a side-scrolling game with very few enemies, based on pure exploration.

Hikkikomori RPG. Yes, it's misspelled, but so is the actual game title.
