Okay, I'm considering getting a PS3 and a primary reason is to play PS1 and PS2 games that I've essentially missed out on all together.
However, since the 60gb with the "emotion engine," or whatever it was, has seen its production halted, I'm curious about what the BC looks like on the other models. Do the newer models still run PS1 games or are they pretty much limited to PS2 compatibility?
Any help from you PS3 owners would be much appreciated.

The new NTSC 80GB model has software b/c.

Actually, the NEWEST NTSC 80gb doesn't have b/c - as far as i know there are two models that have b/c:Niode wrote:The new NTSC 80GB model has software b/c.
60gb - hardware b/c for PS1/PS2
80gb Metal Gear Solid Bundle - PS2 software b/c, PS1 hardware b/c
I have the latter and it works fine for both PS1/PS2 games.

Re: PS3 Backward Compatibility?
iirc, the new 80gig & the upcoming 160gig PS3s will have PS1 BC, but ZERO PS2 BC...
if you want PS2 BC at all, it looks like you're gonna have to track down a 60gig online or grab a MGS PS3 bundle while you can...

Re: PS3 Backward Compatibility?
If you have the motorstorm or metal gear solid 80GB you have backwards compatability. If you get the brand new 80GB without the packin game you dont have no ps2 compat only ps1. Check wikipedia for more info.

Re: PS3 Backward Compatibility?
Wiki does have a nice little grid for the features of all PS3 models. ALL ps3's will play ps1 games. It's only the ps2 bc you have to worry about.
The original 20gb and 60 gb models are the ones with hardware -- ie full and complete -- backward compatibility. I just bought a used 60gb model from someone on another forum this week and so far it works great for PS2 games. It's quite nice to have a real, first-party, wireless, rumble controller with all my Playstation games.

Re: PS3 Backward Compatibility?
I personally own the 80GB motorstorm pack. Most ps2 games work on it. If I could do it all over again, I would have gotten the 60GB version though. I have no intentions of getting rid of what I own though.

Well it was supported anyway.
Yet again Sony dropping features but not dropping the price…

More harddrive space, but less machine also! They have already lost like $3 billion on the ps3 and are trying to recoup some of that money.

Glad I tracked down a used 60GB earlier this year. Emotion Engine FTW! On a related note, I'm surprised at how many PS2 games support 16x9.
