do you still get a kick out of it?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

do you still get a kick out of it?

Post by RCBH928 »

I know this is a "retro" forum, but do you still get a kick out of older games?
I am particularly talking about games before the SNES era, i believe they are called 4th generation consoles?
NES, master system, atari, etc...

I downloaded an emulator to check out popeye on the nes, just for old time sake...
and i also got batman and river city ransom...
boy does it give you a nice feeling of nostalgia and how much things moved on, specially the midi music ...but i can't continue...its so much rinse and repeat...its just too simple,
1 button jump , 1 buttom attack

and its basically same thing all along except when you move into another stage things look slightly different or of different colors.

I really don't know how such simple games used to be exciting and fun back then, maybe because i was a kid and my brain was simple too, but i believe adults used to play these games too..

ex. does any one remember the circus game on the atari (i think there is a comodor version too) where you are a clown i think you ride a lion and you have to jump through fire hoops, it had like 3 frames per second....
Do you still feel excited about this kind of gaming or wish to go back to it?

I do not own a nes or sms system at this point. I have one of the nes bootleg systems, butno games. I do have several games in mind i still want to play but the list is much shorter than it once was. I'd say smb3 and megaman2 i'd sit and play still maybe smb2 (and kung fu my all time retro fave)

as for old games, i still have my 2600 connected so i can play joust.

Lately, I've been playing more Gameboy than NES, but that should still count.
I still do a decent amount of NES.

I'll play some Master System every now and then, but not a ton.

Atari, I haven't touched in quite a while

Unfortunatly, as much as I hate to admit it, I can barely play most Genesis games for more than 30mins. I mean, I really appreciate 2D art and gameplay, but growing up w/ pretty much only 3D, that takes away any nostalgia factor I would have. Technological progress sucks sometimes :( .

Most Genesis games? sure -- there was a lot of crap -- not unlike today.
But the very best I can play quite a bit. Sonic games, shooters, puzzle games -- stuff like that still age well.

These reasons that you claim to hinder retro games, is the strength that I find in them.
What I mean is... today's games are too complicated to enjoy in short bursts. I get sick and tired of waiting an hour or two until I can finally find a save-point.
I grew up in a time where games were more like a sport than a movie. With the NES you had to practice, practice, and practice more to learn and memorize each level before you made it to the next one... and if you got lucky and passed a level there was no save-point to reward yourself with. Instead you would hope to get lucky the next time you turned on the game to play again.

You also mention that kids like these games because they are simple and wondered why adults played them too. It's simple I was addicted to WOW and spent hours playing the most current incarnation of Final Fantasy, but as my full time job, age, wife, and child began to fill the time in which I played long advanced games I went back to play these simple "rinse and repeat" games. I like these games because I can play (or practice) in small chunks of time and it betters my ability for advancement when I do have an hour or so to dedicate to beating the game. There have been times my wife and I almost got into arguments because I asked her to wait (or get the baby) until I could reach a save-point.

I know I am rambling, but arcade games (and NES, SMS, GB, and some SNES/Genesis games) were great for a quick fix, and the better you got at them the longer the "fix" would last. New games, which I still enjoy - just not as much, are like a movie meaning that they require a large chunk of time and dedication because they pay off with the "fix" at the end.

I gotta admit, I do appreciate SpaceBooger's opinion and agree. I miss when I could sit down for five minutes and play a quick game of something. Now it feels like I have to dedicate hours to do anything in a game. I've quit playing RPGs almost entirely because I just don't have time for them anymore.

Plus, as Racket said, there was a lot of garbage, but the best are worth going back for. No matter how far we get in terms of games, I can't go back to the NES and say Kirby's Adventure was nothing. Of course, I generally don't play too much of the 8-bit era anyway, but my SNES has easily been one of my most used consoles this year, and my 360 the least.

Yeah, i find myself buying more xbla games than actual disc games because they're just too long and require wayyy to much dedication in one sitting.

Gotten into shmups and fighters (though fighting games isn't new for me)

I'm right there with you -- I like the simplistic controls.
