Nominate Games That Defined The Neo-Geo

Post by racketboy »

So which games should be featured on the "Games That Defined The Neo-Geo"

I'm guessing the biggest ones would be the long-running series like
Fatal Fury
Metal Slug
King of Fighters
Samurai Shodow
Art of Fighting (?)

What other ones should make the cut?

Art of Fighting and Fatal Fury can be lumped into the King of Fighters franchise since they were the same universe. But as far as games that would define the Neo...

Samurai Shodown I and/or II- This game drew people to the machines. Fatal Fury was popular to an extent, but it was Shodown that made people notice the Big Red Cabs.
Metal Slug - definitely the Slug series. It was basically Contra on steroids, plus awesome and win.
Garou MOTW - I know what I said about the FF series, but this game gave Street Fighter III a major run for it's money.

That's all i can think of at the mo, but I'm sure I'll come up with a few more when I have more attention focused on here.

It was in a lot of the MVS machines, but it also showed up on a lot of other platforms....
Did it originate on the Neo-geo?

The ones you mentioned racket are good....except Art of Fighting. If that defined the Neo it may have not done too well. Samurai Showdown 2 especailly. That's when NeoGeo really took off in my neighborhood.

Bust a Move! My friends and I sunk so many quarters into the arcade version before we got a snes copy. Endless competition and good times. It eventually got ported to every system under the sun too.

I would definatly mention some shmups too. Especailly Pulstar, Blazing Star, Twinkle Star Sprites and Viewpoint.

Originally Taito released it as a stand alone in Japan on their B System, but when it went international it was a Neo Geo release with a name change: Bust A Move.

That's why I put the (?) by AOF :)
I think it may be a defining series, even if it wasn't that good.
Pulstar was probably the best-know shmup on the system, correct? I think most of the rest fall more toward the "hidden gem" status... But I'm far from a NG expert, so I'd like to get more feedback on this...

But the AES was the first console release?

I learned about bust-a-move through Neo-geo hence why i'd recommend it on the list. Otherwise that listlooks pretty good to me.
