SNES vs SNES2
SNES vs SNES2
I understand the SNES2 doesn't have S-video output. How noticeable of a difference will S-Video make on an LCD TV compared to Composite on an older SNES?
Re: SNES vs SNES2
It'll make more of a difference. IMO, composite's artifacts are more noticeable on 2D colorful games than it is on 3D games, which are often drab and shit. I think the SNES2 can be modded to support s-video, so look into that.exploder wrote:I understand the SNES2 doesn't have S-video output. SNES2 cannot be modded for s-vid. Nintendo totally gutted the output from the model 2 to make it cheaper.
Good question, though. I wonder about this, too. I only have an older tube TV so it doesn't much matter right now. But have a model 1 and 2 SNES and the only reason I'm holding onto the 1 is in case the s-vid looks that much better when I finally upgrade to an LCD set.
Let us know what you find out if you do some experimenting.

Agreed, you should just settle for less, because RGB is not widely available to US citizens.RackGaki wrote:I suggest everyone use the S-video cable - don't let the dirty foreigners scare you off!Chizzles wrote:Use RGB, S-Video is for dirty foreigners.
Just take your losses and cope with bad image quality. You could mod your tv or buy another tv that does support it, but I bet you don't care about image quality us foreigners are so fond of.
I got a Super Famicom with RGB cable before the snes even came out in the US. RGB Looks like a computer screen, and it is basically the same. only lower resolution.
All of the info about the S-video is true. It looks much better than composite cables on an LCD. But if your TV doesn't have a decent upscaler though it'll still look pretty crappy.
The model 2 won't output s-vid, which is sad because it came out much later. I have both models and since I'm using a CRT it doesn't matter too much. Personally I use my model 2 becasue it's nice and small and fits in my entertainment center perfectly. Also my model 1 is yellow as heck. I do miss the sweet eject button....

Lol, yeah my SNES is yellow too. I was thinking about very lightly sanding it down to expose its true color hiding just hundredths of a millimeter away.
I wanted to pick up a version 2 SNES just to assure thats it was made more recently then the original model, but being that it doesn't support S-video, to me, makes all the difference.
