Somewhat newbie RPG-er

Post by lildozer74 »

First off let me say awesome site, as you can tell im new here, and I love it so far. Its great to see a place that is full of people who play lots of games like I do (none of my friends do). Ok now to my topic: I was one of those guys who absolutely hated RPG's until my life changed from one game = Morrowind, wow. Man did it open up my eyes to how fun (and time consuming) these games could be. Ive tried a few othes (i dont like the turn based stuff) but all in all Im still a noob. Ive been playing Sacred Underworld ALOT lately. I really like the hack n slash, collect gear type games. So is there any great games that anyone can reccomend? I have played and beat most of the ones below: PS- thanks for any posts!

Morrowind :D
oblivion
Sacred Underworld :D
Dungeon siege
Loki
diablo

( Edit: I wasnt sure if CPU games were like, forbidden here, so sry if thats true)

Nah, PC titles may not get talked about much, but we still love them. If you're into Diablo style games, why not try out Titan's Quest? There's a lot of similarity there. Also Nox, though it's getting a little old. And finally, have you tried Neverwinter Nights? How about Baldur's Gate? Icewind Dale? There are some good American PC RPGs if you know where to look.

I hope this helps you out a little.

Ack thanks for the reply. woops i forgot to add titan quest to my list, loved it, replayed it about 4 times. Didnt care much for neverwinter nights, the story and eye candy was great, but the turn based killed me. I have heard alot about baldurs gate but i never played it, icewind dale sounds familiar, never played it though.

If you're interested in Baldur's Gate, you will need P-A-T-I-E-N-C-E. It was a great game back in its day, although it will probably seem a bit dated if you play it today. It's a slow but satisfying game. Trying to keep your party organized and in formation will give you migraines at times.

And you should expect more of the same from Icewind Dale since it uses the same engine.

If you like western D&D-style RPGs, they are good choices.

Also note, if you're at all familiar with Dungeons and Dragons, Baldur's Gate is D&D 2.0. I believe so is Icewind Dale. Just an FYI.

I'm not a big american RPG guy, but if youre at all into console gaming and own a 360, I recently watched the IGN review of Too Human and he kept comparing it to Diablo. Might be worth a look?

Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance is a fun hack'n'slash RPG. Kinda feels like a beefed up version of Gauntlet. It also has 2 player cooperative play for the story mode!

Sounds like you're into Western Action-RPGs. The bad news is that you're just about out of the usual candidates (especially if you've already played through Titan Quest and Immortal Throne; and I assume you've already played the omitted sequels and expansions like Diablo 2 & LoD, Dungeon Siege 2 & Broken World, etc). One potential candidate is FATE which was made by Travis Baldree who'd later move on to (the now-defunct) Flagship Studios to create Mythos (currently in limbo). After that, though, you're basically scraping the bottom of the barrel with games like Silverfall and Legend: Hand of God, etc.

Some good news is that Sacred 2 is supposed to be out this September. Plus the kill-n-loot theme is one of the staples of MMORPGs, so you could always look into that. In other news, Gas Powered Games just released Space Siege... but I wouldn't recommend it since it's sorta a dumbed-down mediocre mess. If you do want to shoot tons of aliens with some light RPG elements, you're better off just getting Alien Shooter: Vengeance.

Well, either way I guess we're still deviating from the RPG genre. If you start to lean more toward the RPG side I have a few recommendations:

Divine Divinity (2002) -- basically if you took Diablo or Sacred and focused more on the RPG part (one of my favorites, and also has a sequel coming next year). Avoid Beyond Divinity.
Arx Fatalis (2002) -- essentially a spiritual successor to Ultima Underworld.
Gothic II, III (2003, 2006) -- a German action-RPG series, mostly a cult series over here. A bit rough around the edges, but some people just plain adore this series.
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines (2004) -- sequel (although unrelated) to Redemption and another cult favorite RPG set in modern day LA.
The Witcher (2007) -- Probably the best Western RPG of the last few years.

Just note that Bloodlines and Gothic 3 were a mess when they came out. If you're gonna take the plunge, make sure to find their latest respective Unofficial Patches. And I was obligated to mention The Witcher, but it's still a pretty new game and does require a somewhat decent machine to play well. Regardless, the Enhanced Edition of The Witcher is scheduled for September so I'd hold off until that's out anyway.

He did mention that turn-based stuff irked him, so I suppose (as much as this pains me, and it truly does because these are some of the best games ever made) that that Infinity Engine games like the Baldur's Gate series, Icewind Dale series, and Planescape: Torment (along with similar-engined games like the Fallout series), along with the Aurora Engine games like the NWN series aren't for him. It sounds like he's not playing for plot or character, but for phat lewt--which is cool, too.

Still, I can't help but highly recommend Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines---AFTER YOU PATCH IT--as a wonderful game that might work for you. Most of the other worthwhile Western-style PC action-RPGs have been mentioned.
