Dreamcast - Weird colors with every outputs

Post by Khan »

Hi everybody !

I'm new here, and I hope I won't ask for something you already answered...
I buyed a VGA Box here (thanks RacketBoy, I received it in 4 days in France, I was really impressed !), so I happily tried it and it appears that all I can get are "funny colors" (see screenshot). I assume it doesn't come from the VGA box (since I tried SVHS output too, assuming it doesn't go through the little chip, and same result). My original black SCART cable wasn't working anymore and I used to use a white RGB cable (which I've lost, so I can't test again). The last time I tried (some years ago), my Dreamcast was working properly.
Has one of you encountered the same problem ? Is the Dreamcast RGB output faulty ?

Thank you for your (coming) help, I hope my beloved Dreamcast is not dead !

Edit: I forgot to tell you that I could only try it on LCDs (a Samsung HDTV through SVHS and VGA ports, and a Samsung LCD screen through VGA).

Wow, I've never seen an image like that.
Maybe it has to do with secam-settings on your tv?
I'm clueless, sorry!

Thanks for you reply !

I have no such settings on my tv, but since it gives the same colorful picture (shiny, isn't it ?) while using the VGA input, I guess it shouldn't be due to a particular signal.

Thank you again anyway !

Wow, that's something I haven't seen before, and I'm quite familiar with usual Dreamcast problems. I just got a VGA box too from Racketboy last week (4 days to Portugal, which was awesome!) and it works great, both with VGA and RCA cables.

Do you still have the original RF cable that came with the Dreamcast? If you try it and everything works ok, the problem is the box. If not, then it's either the TV or the Dreamcast.

BTW, I just remembered, Samsung HDTV's are known for having issues when connecting a Dreamcast through VGA. I fortunately didn't have any problems with my Samsung M87, but you should try googling for that and see if something comes up.

Thanks NebachadnezzaR,

In France Dreamcast were not sold with a RF Cable but with a SCART one (not RGB, unfortunately), so I can't test. And you're right, I've seen on forums that Samsung screens are not all working properly with the Dreamcast on VGA, but it would be weird that the same problem occurs on every inputs, no ? Except if Samsung used the same post-processing chipset for all their inputs...
I'll check if I can find a plain old TV to check what it looks like, I would be very disappointed if I had to keep such a big box only to play DC ;-)

Have a nice day !

I'm stumped. I posted this on gamesx.com. They're some of the hardest core tech guys around.

Thanks a lot NotBlaine, that's very nice !!!!!

I will be away for a few days, so I might not be able to answer - of course if I find out a solution I will post it in this topic.

if you can find a cheap old CRT VGA monitor to try it on, that would be my first step.
