Do GameGear games play on the Master System?

No and as far as I know no. The GG had a slightly better palette I believe, so it probably would have been too costly or complex at the time even though they're very similar.

Here's what Wiki says:

An adapter called the MasterGear Converter allowed for Sega Master System cartridges to be plugged in and played on the Game Gear. The reverse though, of playing a Game Gear game on a Master System console, was not possible due to the Game Gear's larger color palette.

The closet thing you'd get to Game Gear games running on a Master system is the ports made by Tec Toy in Brazil, You'd have to pay through the nose for these, mind.

Well, are there enough or any games worth buying a GameGear for then? The only games I can think of for the GameGear that aren't just ports of Master System and Genesis games that get praise are Legend of Oasis, Sonic Drift, Sonic Chaos, and Shining Force.
Is it all worth it? Are they relatively expensive?

The Oasis games are pretty good but can be harder to find. Not horribly expensive usually though. I got a complete copy from the UK (no region lock on GG games) for $15 shipped.

Tails Adventure is another RPG exclusive to the Game Gear.

A large portion of the Game Gear library is available in the SMS library. Many of the games that also appear on Genesis are at least somewhat different on Game Gear.

Desert Strike and Ecco on Game Gear are great. I also really like Micro Machines on Game Gear though it can be hard to find.

There was a topic about this and a poster told of someone that got the Game Gear games working on the Master System via a GG Flash Cart. The only problem was, the games appeared in Black and White.

Yep... I've also heard of some people getting it done and the colour palette being all screwed up.

You're thinking of Defenders of Oasis, I believe. I just recently bought it. I've been wanting it for ages, and I finally have it. (Apparently, somebody unloaded their entire Game Gear collection at a local store where I buy used video games. I honestly spent nearly $50 on Game Gear games.)

Amusingly, the Sonic games on Game Gear aren't really all that great. If you want some awesome Game Gear games, then get the Shinobi games, as well as Batman Returns, as I could almost swear that it's running on the same engine. It plays very similarly to a Shinobi game, and the explosion effects and whatnot are strikingly similar. During its time, Game Gear had some pretty impressive ports of Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat II. The sprites are massive! Furthermore, the animation isn't too bad, although the actual movement (walking, jumping, etc.) is pretty jerky. I really don't care for the controls, either, as they're pretty unresponsive when trying to perform special moves.

Both Streets of Rage games on Game Gear are really good, with the second one easily being the best. Primal Rage is actually pretty awesome on Game Gear, and that's coming from somebody who hates the console versions.

Game Gear doesn't get the praise that it deserves.

Primal Rage was utter trash on the consoles though, Kevinski. Utter trash.

On a side note, Pingfa, I'd really suggest you pick up the power cable. Game Gear had only one flaw, and that was that it ate batteries like a champ. If you haven't gone ahead and grabbed it, do it. Also, I'm pretty sure it had a rechargeable battery pack...been years since I messed around with one, though.
