Microsoft just added it (or announced it would be in as optional) but im curious why the complaints, pc gamers have been doing it for much longer and i havent really heard a complaint from anybody saying it was a problem. Then when they try to bring this somewhat nice feature to a console, its trashed like no tomarrow. I dont know about you guys but im fine w/ installing games to load faster, PS3 or otherwise. And for all the Sony-haters that think your hdd will be filled with these, well i have 5 game installs (and only 5 games that do install out of my 20 games for it now, the rest its optional ala Ninja Gaiden Sigma), several expansion packs, season 4 of family guy, whole bunch of trailers and one movie, my whole music collection (about 1000 songs not much depending on compresion meathod), several pictures, and at least 100+ themes (they add up EVENTUALLY), 10 PSN titles, 4 PSone Classics, and i still have 30gb left on my 60gb PS3. Im just saying unless you put absolutly everything on your ps3 and use every feature, its probably not gonna add up much and if you have several game installs, chances are you bought the system to play games on it, not download trailers and movies. Anyway thats my 2 cents, feel free to provide CONSTRUCTIVE critisizm.
one thing i forgot to add: THESE INSTALLS ARE VERY RARELY MORE THAN 1gb
Why are people complaining about installs for games...

I hear ya! I do not mind installing a game at all. In most cases, like Ninja Gaiden, the developers teach you more about the story and background of the characters as the game is installing. Lets see... play the game and be a 5 year old about it... or get immersed and my money's worth... Yea, I'm gonna install. Besides, I'd rather burn through an HDD then my Blu-Ray laser.

It's that the main reason it was implemented was because of the PS3's poor read speed. BluRay was a big selling point for a lot of PS3 owners, and the fact that installations are required, isn't exactly a testament to it's greatness. Also, many of the complaints stem from the bashing of the DVD format still being used on the 360. People ragged on disc swapping, so people countered it with the fact that installations are required on PS3.
Personally I wouldn't mind it, but I think it should be optional or a least have a set amount of drive space reserved for it. Also, some games on 360 already install to the HDD (like THP8). You just don't know it, because it's masked by a video or loading screen.

Save file sizes have nothing to do with games installing in the background.RyaNtheSlayA wrote:thats why halo 3 saves were big?Flak Beard wrote:It's that the main reason it was implemented was because of the PS3's poor read speed. I've got over 25gb of my HDD given over to forced installs, I could just delete them, but it's a pain re-installing whenver I want to replay a game. Personally, I think all installs should be optional - forced installs remove the pick-up and play nature thats been inherent to console gaming since it existed.
If the installs allow me to play without the need for a disc each time and enhance load times, I'm all for them. If not, then to hell with them. I'm going to assume the PS3 still checks for a disc. I would settle for an auto-login online verification system like Company of Heroes uses on PC now. No disc required as long as the machine has an internet connection and you give the game 2 seconds to login. I'm fine with that.
