We write the Playstation 2 Hidden Gems article

Post by bonegolem »

I love this site; all of it. But my favorite section has to be the Hidden Gems section.
I can't wait to see that section for every console in my possession. So I thought I'd skip ahead and see if we can make a mockup while we wait!

Obvious disclaimer: not trying to take anyone's place or to influence the sure-to-be-awesome Racketboy article. Just trying to toy around a bit. Anything bad I'm provoking is unwanted, and apologies are profusely issued.

I'll concentrate on games and genres I know a bit. I'll leave the rest in more capable hands. Any correction appreciated, hence the "possible candidates I haven't played yet" section.

SURVIVAL HORROR

Obvious Choices: Resident Evil and Fatal Frame series.
My candidate: Haunting Ground. It's a "true" survival horror, where you are left as completely weaponless young girl (but with the aid of a dog!) against a series of pursuers. The plot reminds me of 18th century Gothic novels with its italian castle setting, the atmosphere is similar to that of a slasher movie. The graphics are very good for the Ps2; they rely a lot on pre-rendered backgrounds, and loading times are almost absent and the character model is... very detailed. The game's best feature is probably the sense of danger it can convey: the pursuers know how to give a scare, and most are so pervertedly twisted that they manage to get on your nerves on more than one way, and the death animations manage to leave you rather unconfortable by leaving the work to your immagination, and showering your immagination with maniacal laughter and limb-tearing noises. There's also a good deal of fan service...
Other titles: Siren and Obscure series, Clock Tower 3, The Thing
Candidates I haven't played yet: Shadow of Memories (never heard of it unless with praise; might be better than my choice), Disaster: Day of Crisis, Raw Danger.

More follows...

Wrong section.

But Disaster Report is tight, if that's the other game on your list. I think Disaster Report is the US version.
