Recent thrift store finds...

Post by glynnahab »

I just had to tell someone about my luck at Goodwill lately. The old lady could care less, so you guys have to hear about it. :P

Planescape: Torment $4.99 - discs only - should have been $2.99 but they raised the price since the game was two discs (???). Normally I'd complain, but this game is awesome and apparently somewhat valuable.

Medieval II: Total War $1.99 - CIB

Unreal Tournament $1.99 - CIB

And, although it's not a game, I also got a sealed copy of the 2005 Grolier Encyclopedia for a buck. Not that impressive, but it had a Best Buy price tag on it for $69.99 - so it feels like a good deal at least. They also had a copy of Daikatana that I nearly bought for the novelty of having one of the most over-hyped games ever.

I know it's not an incredibly impressive list, but I'm really happy about Planescape: Torment. :)

That's the fun! You never know what's going to be there. Too bad you haven't had any luck... yet. You gotta believe in thrift store karma. Sooner or later you're going to come across some good stuff.

And nice scores, glynnahab! Isn't it the biggest thrill finding such goodies for just a few bucks?

Keep searching. I've had plenty of luck at thrift stores, and highly recommend also visiting local pawn shops and flea markets. Good god, definitly look in the flea markets!

Good finds, UT99 is still one of my most played games even today. Heck the online competition is still very fierce.

I actually passed on alot of Dreamcast games today, I did decide to pickup another copy of Typing of the Dead though. Before yall go off on me most were sports games that I already have, but I was tempted by Space Channel Five. Instead I purchased 16 of the 19 tapes of Red Dwarf and Robotech 2 the Sentinels. While that may sound like a brilliant purchase my acquisition of seven tapes the first three Doctors a couple weeks ago takes the cake. Not just because The Three Doctors was part of the purchase...

I just added a Goodwill in my weekly driving so I can usually get decent deals. It also helps that I know they put out the stuff they got Saturday, Monday afternoon.

Thats a cool find, I never really look through the PC games!
I think I posted this somewhere else, but I found Intelligent Cube for ps1 complete and mint at Goodwill for 3.99. That was exciting. It was just flipping through a stack of crap cd's and *pow* there it was. I also picked up Super Mario RPG for 3.99. I found Master of Monsters(box and game) and Moonwalker complete at good will for 3.99 each. I find stuff all the time but I can't afford it.

Yeah, thrift stores is all about timing, and luck. I find it is best to get to my local thrfit store early, beating out the other collectors and ebay resellers who come out in droves looking for gold. I go at least once a week. This week I picked up some N64 games for $3 each- Mario Kart 64, Super Smash Bros, 007: The World is Not Enough, and Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire. I am kicking myself for not picking up the Gameboy printer that I saw the other day. I don't even own an original gameboy but I thought that was a cool thing that you don't see to often.

Not quite a thrift store, but along the same lines..

My girlfriend and I stopped at a yard sale the other weekend, and saw they had a few Super Nintendo games in a box. I picked up The Lost Vikings, Street Fighter 2 and Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Donkey Kong Country 2 and one other game that I can't remember at the moment. When we asked how much the woman wanted for them she said "$.10" each. Score!

Metropolis Street Racer for DC - missing manual $0.99

Now if only I can find that copy of Earthbound I've been dreaming about. :P

I was happy with some finds today:

Mike Tyson's Punch-Out (NES) $1
Wizardry- Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord (NES) CIB $1
Bushido Blade 2 (PS) $2.75
Triple Score (Super Hang-On / W C Soccer / Columns (GEN) CIB $2.02
Sega Genesis model 2 power supply $1.01

-plus these for $10 total:
Sega Genesis model 2 power supply
NES power supply
Sega CD

The Sega CD was really dirty but I cleaned it up and it works fine. Yay me! Never had one before. I only recently got my first Genesis and 32X too.

And here's what I mean about good thrift store karma:

A couple of months ago I bought a power supply for a Sega Genesis for a buck. I didn't have a Genesis but I figured some day I'd come across one. Sure enough, a couple of weeks later I found one with no cords. Ordered an AV cord from racketboy and was psyched to play some games when it came. Turns out the power supply was for a model 1. So I ended up buying an $8 replacement brick on ebay for my model 2.

Fast forward to today and guess what came in handy? That model 1 cord, which powers up the Sega CD. It all worked out so nicely in the end!

I always look for power supplies, av cords, controllers, etc. and snatch up whatever I find. That stuff usually comes in handy, whether it's something I need for my own systems or for fixing up one to sell.
