suggest an nes rpg
ive allways wanted to play one of the original nes classics, my two choices are zelda or final fantasy... is one especially fun to play nowadays just to appreciate the early attempts at the genre or what?
if you like any of the new final fantasies you might not like the original. i guess the same could be said for the original zelda too though. dragon quest is a popular game too. i like FF, but thats just me. its really hard compared to modern ones though... check racketboys best of teh nes section for more!

I can't recommend Crystalis highly enough. It's a far better action RPG than Zelda. It plays very much like Secret of Mana on the SNES if you're familiar with that.
Final Fantasy stands up well today IMO. It's definately old school, and the combat has some quirks, but it's fun and cute. The party system adds some depth and replayablity.
I wasn't so impressed with Dragon Warrior. There's no party, just you. It seemed like a lot of leveling up too, and save points were few and far between. I don't think I'd attempt it without an emulator to save state on, you might go a couple hours without finding a place to save.
There are other RPGs on the NES that come to mind, but they're ports of PC games and you're probably better off playing them in a DOS or Apple emulator. I'm thinking Ultima, Wizardry, The Bard's Tale.

Both Zelda and FF1 are fantastic games, but I am going to have to side with Zelda on this one. It has a sprawling world that you can just go explore. I have beaten it countless times but still have fun firing it up and just walking around. Granted I am bias in that it is my favorite game of all time...
FF1 is not without merit, however the more recent ports have dumbed down the difficulty quite a bit. The original is a really just an interpretation of AD&D as a video game (ej to recharge magic you must sleep). The later ones added in Magic/Mana Points thus making magic less of a tactical decision that may or may not win the battle to just another type of attack. True this is more like the later games, but they did not weaken the magic enough to make it not broken. Playing four White mages use to be a challenge, now you can beat it with just one with only a moderate difficulty increase - one black mage is still hard as hell though (unless you cheat and only allow yourself to level up magic and hp). I am going to stop here before the hardcore Final Fantasy fans come round...

Zelda stands up very well through time. It's a long and interesting game with tons of exploration... but really easy to understand and pick up and play. It follows very basic rules of game design, and actually paved the way in making said rules concrete.
Final Fantasy really laid ground work for the modern turn based RPG... but this game hardly stands up through time. I personally find it very dull and boring. And the worst part, like a lot of RPGs, has a very rough learning curve. You might also find that some of the little things in modern RPGs that make the user interface tolerable are missing... making this game very difficult to enjoy at times. Unlike Zelda which has a very simple and self explanatory UI, FF is very convoluted and difficult to learn at times.
Dragon Warrior IMO is just boring. It's a turnbased, 1 party member game. I mean WHAT? Turn based, but you only have ONE party member? Yeah it's another ground breaking release into the new series of Console JRPG... but meh, this game is good for nostalgia and that's about it.
Crystalis on the other hand... I have to throw this one out there just like a few others did. It's awesome! Take zelda, make it cooler, and toss the SNK name on it! It's really good.
There are several others as well...
