Any Metal Slug game (they're all pretty much the same, which isn't a bad thing), Megaman: Power Battles/Fighters or whatever it's called, Robotron, and Bosconian.

galaxian was huge. also there was this one, i dont remember it names, but you had two joysticks and you have to battle robots with the person next to you. it was really awesome. does anyone know what im talking about? one robot had a homing missile that was heart shaped.

Virtual On is what you are talking about. They made a sequel, too, and it was good.

Well I do like shoot em ups alot but I also like a good marvel vs capcom style fighter that has just weird characters also like vampire slayer
