Codemasters founders now in the Order of the British Empire

Post by Ack »

So both Richard and David Darling, the founders of Codemasters, were appointed Commanders of the Order of the British Empire during the Queen's Birthday Honors this year. Cool beans.

Nice to see some british developers getting some love.

I feel the OBE is a little outdated now though, we don't have an empire anymore so how can someone represent it?

Many people shun the award, be it for fame or because they truly don't want the award due to it's stance. AKA the British Empire thing, whether or not that is due to it's old fashioned views or its archaic principles I don't know but it's not held as highly anymore.

I'll be totally honest with you....screw that, I think it would be awesome to be knighted.

In Portugal the President gives out some medals to civilians each year. It doesn't really mean that much but it's a nice way of recognizing some people that have done nice stuff (he gave one to a comedian a while ago, for example).

I also know a Dame (the female equivalent to "Sir"). She said the only benefit is sometimes you get a nicer seat in a restaurant. I asked if Dames get a sword like the guys did, but apparently even the Sirs have to pay for their own swords. If that is really the case... :)

OBE/CBE is not knighthood. Only the top two ranks are when an individual can be called Sir or Dame. OBE is only the officer rank. They do not get a title. They can just use it at the end of their surname.

EG John Doe OBE

Or if our friend John has got a degree and masters degree we could call him John Doe OBE MA BSc for example. The highest recognised civilian title would have Sir/Dame in front of it. IR Sir Ian McKellan, Sir Alan Sugar or Dame Judy Dench.

Still, I wouldn't mind having a mention in the new year's honours. However the title is a little outdated now. The whole knighthood and the ceremony hasn't changed for hundreds of years.

Eh, I know, but I still think it would be cool. Sure it's outdated, but it's still a nifty little piece of history.
