Best character sprites

Post by Ack »

Ok Fighter fans, I've played all manner of different 2D fighters, but I definitely have favorites. One thing that irks me is bad character art. If I don't like the way a fighter looks, I almost certainly won't like how it plays. The graphics don't necessarily have to be good, but some companies just have better artwork. So post who you think has the best art and why.

Personally, I think Sammy's Guilty Gear series has the best art, especially Guilty Gear Isuka, even though I hated a lot of Isuka's mechanics. I'm also a big fan of the character designs in Marvel vs. Capcom 1 and 2, and X-Men vs. Streetfighter. I'm not a fan of how SNK makes many of their characters look, and I really never was a fan of digitized sprites.

Guilty Gear series, Samurai Spirits Zero 6 (I think), and prob some others use higher resolution sprites compared to the Capcom fighters and the old SNK stuff. I kind of consider those seperately for that reason.

As far as the low resolution sprites, I think the larger SNK sprites like 1-5 of the Samurai Spirits series look pretty good. The Street Fighter 3 sprites are very fluid, as well as the Vampire series. Not a fighter, but the Metal Slug series has some massive sprites... Waku Waku 7, Super Dodge Ball. All of these are on arcade boards, some on Saturn I guess.

Out of the fighters, I like Street Fighter III's the most. They aren't as high-res, but they have a lot of character and fluid animation. Same goes for Mark of the Wolves.

I agree with Metal Slug and Waku Waku 7 -- great stuff.

I really liked the character sprites for Astal, the look great. Odin Sphere had great sprites too.

Neo Geo had the goods. So many great sprites...
I think Blazing Star is awesome for a shmup. Great animation and bosses. Metal Slug is great too, especailly the bosses.

For fighters I really like Samurai Showdown II. Maybe not as detailed as some later games but they look amazing too me. Waku Waku 7 is really cool and unique.

But i think my favorite fighter is JoJo's BIzzare Adventure. So unique and cool looking characters and the stands are awesome. Sprites at their best!

Atlus has the best sprites. Odin Sphere or Arcana Heart. Huge, beautiful, just cant go wrong! For old school games, I think Super Mario RPG had the most beautiful sprites. Larger, nicer, more colorful than all before on the SNES.

Guilty Gear on the DC blew me away the first time I saw them, but I've never played another GG game.

Do they get much better in the later GG games?

I agree about Mario RPG looking great on the super nes, but I think R-Type III has some better and more colorful eye candy!

How is Arcana Heart. I've heard things both ways. I know it looks awesome, but how does it play?

Odin Sphere looks faaaantastic.

Another game with pretty sprites is the obscure fighter Fallen Angels for the arcade.

If we're talking strictly fighting games, then I'm a fan of Samurai showdowns big intense sprites... otherwise, Alucard is still one of the best sprites in gaming history in my mind.
Don't that just look oh so tasty?
