Loud Fan!

Post by SpaceBooger »

So my PC keep overheating. While I was on vacation I ordered a new (powerful) system/case fan.
Now my damn PC is so loud, from the "whoosh" of the fan, I can not hear my wife talking to me when she stands in the doorway to my office.

Any suggestions as to how I can quiet my fan?

Drape a blanket over it? Though that kind of defeats the purpose.

Few options...

Buy a case that supports 120mm fans. Bigger slower fans move more air and are quieter.

Buy low speed 120mm fans (or 80mm for your current case fans but that will just let your comp overheat again)

Rout your cables so they don't block airflow

Mod your fans.

Cut the fan grills out of your case.

Heres my getto silent computer.. I cant even tell when its on (Not that is ever off) :D

Comp is powered on but the fans are moving so slow that i looks like its off hehe

a few solutions

1) get a new fan. some fans use cheap bushings. get a fan with ball bearings. it makes a huge difference

2) remount your fan. if it is in one of those plastic enclosures and not seated properly it will rattle around and make quite a racket. if it is screwed into the case, take out the screws and rescrew it into the case. easy solution.

3) remove the major source of heat! if you are using a cheap power supply, just go and get a new one. if its a video card, they sell aftermarket heatsyncs and fans. Usually this will be a much better solution.

Best of luck! shoot me a message on aim if you need any advice! also, post your system specs, and that will let people help you alot better!

I love your ghetto rig fuctfuct!

But yeah everyone has said some good simple and affordable fixes. I'll bring it up just because it hasn't and I suppose someone will ring it out sooner or later... water cooling can be more quiet, but it's radiator is always loud and it is NOT worth the money unless you really push your system to the brink of melt down. (very expensive I must repeat). So don't let anyone con you into it.

Your best bets though are just making sure there is good air flow, which isn't just quality fans. I hate a lot of those "built" PCs from e-machine or Dell because their case design sometimes does NOT facilitate proper air flow (I've seen machines with two fans mounted to it, both blowing inward). You should have an air flow that moves from a cool opening over the lowest temperature items and flowing out to another opening with the hottest or least important components at the end.

for instance fuctfuct has a great design... he starts bring cool air over the HDDs, and that warm air then mixes with fresh air coming in off the bottom, that air is then mixed with the air coming off the CPU and pulled up to the hottest point the PSU... the PSU also can handle the most heat, it's a great ending point (ever wonder why most designs put the PSU at the top?) That extra fan though facilitates pulling more air out before the PSU, because if the PSU has to much hot air blowing over it, the air never actually gets to cool and its heat comes back down into the machine...

Those are good ideas, but its a brand new fan its just so fast and pushing so much air that it is making the noise.

I should have heeded the reviews that stated this fan was loud. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications ... dy=REVIEWS

I have it connected to my motherboard... but cant figure out how to not have it on all the time in the bios.
I have an ABIT UL8 motherboard.
