Who here remembers Descent 1 and 2?

Post by StevieC »

I happen to be a fan of the series, as the opportunity to maneuver in zero-G is something not many of us will experience in real life, it's the closest we can get. Anyone else here remember storming the mines?

When the first Descent came out the graphics were spectacular first time i ever saw real 3d enemies the music was great and blowing up robots was fun once you got the hang of the controls. And who doesnt remember blowing up the core and then frantically looking for the exit :)

btw was Descent 3 any good ?

I tried a couple of them but I guess I'm just too late to the party. Much like Tribes, I can appreciate what it did for gaming without actually seeing past it's primitive layer.

Also, did you ever play a sort of Decent clone called Forsaken? I enjoyed that on PS1.

I found this torrent the other day it does add hardware support for the graphics and the controls are better.
It´s not perfect tho but it´s worth it to try the games out :)

both games are included

Haven't played Forsaken

Descent 3 strays too far from the game's roots. A GREAT thing to look at if you liked Descent 1 and 2 is called D2X-XL, available here: http://www.descent2.de/

GREAT remake with a LOT of enhancements. You can disable the enhancements you don't want, but the thing can support high-res textures, higher polygon count models, even lets you replace the 2d sprites of the powerups with polygon models for everything except the invincibility, cloaking device, shield orb, and energy sparks. Check it out.

yep I remember Descent well - amazing games for their time, Forsaken is worth checking out, at the time of it's release it was one of the first DirectX accelerated games and looked incredible, in fact Im pretty sure I still have my forsaken OEM disc that came bundled with my TNT2 :p

Forsaken was very pretty but it in terms of play value it paled in comparison to Descent. Descent rocked. The core code is open sourced now, so some people have modded the engine a little. I always found it a bit on the difficult side to control, but deathmatch was especially fun to play.

I never was able to dig Descent, too vertiginous for me. Was a BIG BIG BIG fan of Freespace, though.

The great thing about Descent is...

InterPlay released it for all 3 major operating systems. Mac, Windows, AND Linux! And you don't all have to be on the same OS to play a LAN game together. The folks at http://www.descent2.de have even managed to improve the network features of the game and what's more, they've gotten the graphics up to the standards of today's games as well. And Descent is one of the few games that lets each player choose their own control layout, and assign any button to any action they want from the word go. Other games would be wise to learn from this.
