O.M.G. Metal Slug is Awesome!
I picked up a Neo-Geo Pocket Color cheap at a yard sale a couple weeks back and it came with Metal Slug: 1st Mission, I'd never played a Metal Slug game before and it completely blew me away.
So after playing through Metal Slug: First Mission I picked up a copy of Metal Slug Anthology for the PS2 and for the last couple weeks I've been having the time of my life. To me the Metal Slug franchise is absolutely amazing. The Humor, the Shooting, The Weapons I just love everything about it. It has quickly gained a place as one of my top video game franchises of all time.
I completed every game on the Anthology Metal Slug 1-6 and Metal Slug X and I think I'm going to play through them all again. For people who have known about Metal Slug for awhile now this might sound like old hat, but for anyone out there who hasn't played the games yet do yourself a favor and pick up the anthology! It can be found fairly inexpensively for about $25 or so.
Simply great.

I love the Metal Slug series, it's just awesome in so many ways. The gameplay is almost perfect, with a great pick up and play value, the graphics remain attractive even after so many years and the sense of humour is just great. I can proudly say that I've played every game from the main series (1 to 6 and X) and some spin-offs, like a GBA version and Metal Slug 3D for the PS2 (not so bad as you might expect, it's actually pretty entertaining), but I missed the MS: 1st Mission you talked about. Got to check it out!

I love metal slug too. However, my only complaint for the PS2 Anthology version is that the loading is shit. Loading for change of character. Loading for the next screen. Loading this. Loading that. My favorite is Metal Slug 3. I love it so much that I bought the Jpn version which has absolutely no stupid loading time.

I'm not trying to rain on the parade here, but can someone tell me what is so great that I am missing in these games?
I've played them all many times starting when the first one came out in arcades. I didn't like it, but I keep trying them because everyone seems to respect them. It should fit right into the kind of games I like (arcade, run-n-gun, tight control) but I just don't get it. I feel like the characters are all slow, I can't stand the graphic style (even though it is very smooth and detailed), and I just don't get the humour. I have no desire to BE the characters like I do in Contra or other games.
I honestly try to like the games and I have respect for them keeping a 2D formula alive but wow, I can't get into them. Sorry, just my opinion.

I completely overlooked that I was so enthralled with the game, but you are correct the load times are a bit redundant after awhile. I liked the games so much I'm able to overlooked this minor flaw, and that is the only one as far as I can see.peace4myheart wrote:I love metal slug too. I had no idea that MS 7 was coming to the DS. I'm very tempted to go purchase a DS, I think they're going for about $51 on ebay if I'm correct?brokenpavement wrote:I've played all of them except for the GBA one and the 3d PS2 import title. Is the GBA one worth $15? It may be because I have such fond memories of playing it at my local skating rink, but the first is still my favorite. They're all fantastic, though. Anyone else excited about MS 7 coming for DS?!
You're not raining on anyone's parade that's what's great about this site is that we can have a discussion about these things. If you've played them it's probably for whatever reason just not your cup of tea, there's nothing we could really explain to change your mind as you've attempted to get into them you just can't. Each of us like what we like and that's that.Doctor Fugue wrote:I'm not trying to rain on the parade here, but can someone tell me what is so great that I am missing in these games?

I do find that I do desire to BE the characters as I'm fighthing through the levels, and for whatever reason I get completely engrossed in the missions as I rescue P.O.W's and Fight of hordes of Zombies & Aliens and eventually Insects. (Puts me into Starship Troopers as you go under ground to find the "Queen" of the bugs. These games just have so many different areas that I'm interested in it's like these creators just mish mashed everything I enjoy into a single game. I also enjoy the fact that despite the greatness of these games that they don't take themselves to seriously. The ability to laugh at one self I find a very admirable trait and this series has that.
and Doctor, I also love Contra and can see a number of elements of it in Metal Slug as well as games such as Blaster Master (Tank Design.) I really think the Metal Slug team has a great grasp on the history of gaming and pays tribute to past games which I love as well.
In conclusion I'll just say to each their own.
