Sega Genesis + HDTV questions...

Post by gokuofheaven »

I just hooked up my Genesis to the HDTV ...and it looks...terrible. It has the grainy effect and on widescreen it looks horrible. I'm guessing the AV Cables for the Genesis 2 would look better. What are my choices at the moment without the AV Cables? Should i just hook it up to the standard television? Thanks in advance.

Mod it to svideo! I dont know about doing it for a model 2, but if you want the instructions are here http://www-unix.ecs.umass.edu/~dhowland/mod/#svideo . I play my SNES with svid on my Panasonic TC-26LX70 and it looks great!

YOu can also go the expensive route and use a SCART output with a XRGB upconverter.

HDTVs have a wide range of upscale converters. Some TVs that display HD content quite nicely upscale SD content quite... poorly.

While I'm a big proponent of playing games on original hardware, I must admit that these days I prefer emulating my Genesis library on my softmodded XBox. Running in 480p on my 32" LCD HDTV, they look so crisp and beautiful, I may never go back :)

If that's not an option for you, I would definitely upgrade to AV cables (I always thought that you could get AV cables for a Genesis 1. Is that not correct?). I'd play with your tv's display settings, as well. You may find that tweaking your tv's brightness and sharpness settings go a long way toward improving SD content.

Sorry to be obtuse about it, but stretching 4:3 content to 16:9 is just not cool.

I can't stand streching either, it needs to be displayed in the correct aspect ratio. Just set your TV to 4:3 and the aspect ratio wil be fine, but what about the upscaling? I don't want to spend alot of money just to find out my games look like crap on it!

Does anyone know of a list that list which LCD TV's have quality upscaling and are fit to use with retro systems?
