Anyone here from Philadelphia?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Anyone here from Philadelphia?

Post by Ivo »

Just wondering. I'm going to travel there in some weeks time. Any place I should go or something like that?

I used to live in Philly and escaped.

Avoid Pats/Genos cheese steaks. They are average and the typical tourist trap. I used to go to a place on South Street for steaks called Jims, it was the best 4 years ago. For hoagies, there is a place on 6th and Fitzwater that I can't remember the name. I know they made their own bread. Awesome hoagies there.

Nightlife is all in Old City. However, the NJ guidos have definitely invaded. I would wander around there and see what you're into. Dirty Franks is fun too. There are lots of blue collar dive bars in South Philly too that are interesting if you want to experience a real Philthy bar. Oh, The Dolphin is classic too. It has an amateur stripper competition on the weekends. The owner is well into her 70s and servers at the bar. No hot girls, but definitely check it out just for the experience.

The best restaurants are owned by some guy named Starr, can't remember his first name. One of them was a cuban place in Old City called Cuba Libre. That place was fun . The drinks are strong and definitely qualify as panty-peelers. ;)

Stay away from North and West Philly. I will summarize:

North - You will be murdered and it will be reported in the Inquirer.
West - You will be murdered and no one will ever find your body.

Have fun!

I would like to visit sometime. Closest I have been is DC.
There are lots of places in the New England area that seem appealing to me...

Pizzeria Rusitica

903 N 2nd St
Philadelphia, PA 19123

This is, hands down, the best pizza I have ever had. The best part is that they are not stingy with their toppings. If you were to order say a pepperoni, you would in turn get a healthy dose of said topping.

I will second the Jim's steaks (4th and South? Its somewhere down there on south I just can't remember). Also, Old City is cool but if you want to feel farther from Jersey Center City can be a good time too. You will have to travel a little farther between bars if you are hopping around then in old city. Still, Monks (15th and Spruce) has one of the biggest beer menu's I've ever seen if you're into that kind of thing. I also recommend the Black Sheep Tavern (somewhere in that area). Also Marathon is a great place to pregame, at least in my neighborhood 19th and Spruce they have a 9-12 happy hour with 2 dollar drafts, including ommegang pints which is a steal esp for Center City.

Wow, such dense jargon. What is a hoagie?

I'm not much for night life, I should add :) Thanks for the input though.

Philladeplhia is very much known for their sandwiches
Here's wikipedia's take on the hoagie:

Another famous sandwich is the Philly Cheese Steak

If it were a few years ago I'd say the arcade at 40th street. It used to be awesome. It still has some good stuff but it's not a place to go anymore. If you're gonna eat go to Tony Luke's and order a roast pork sharp with rabe. It's better than his cheesesteaks imo. If you're going to be around 40th then go to 43rd and chestnut. There's a place called donuts+. Order many donuts, iced coffee, and even a hot sausage and your bill will be like $6 and your stomach will thank you. I used to live across the street from them so I speak from much experience. And for fried chicken you can't go wrong with either New York Fried Chicken or Crown Fried Chicken. Insomnia cookies is also really good but they're only open at night and kind of expensive. But there's nothing like a hot chick delivering brownies to your door at 1AM. Also around there is Sitar which is a pretty good Indian buffet that's cheap (ask for the mango drink if they don't give it to you automatically). Off 21st and Chestnut is a pretty awesome Japanese place called Tampopo. It's cheap and really good food. If you're going to chinatown there's a lot of great places to eat but if you are there around 10-10:30AM go to dim sum at Ocean Harbor. That should do you pretty well for food. If you like live concerts there's the Trocadero which is right outside chinatown. There is The Gallery which is a mall at 12th and Market. It has 2 gamestops and a pretty large FYE. Also if you're coming in at 30th Street Station and don't care about money the bar there has some really good, exotic food.
