Xbox 360 DRM fixed (sort of)

Post by Doctor Fugue »

Apparently the DRM issue will be fixed soon, as 360 owners will be able to switch the licences, but still only if the new console is a refurb...meaning if you buy a new console or upgrade to an Elite you are still out of luck.

Why do people complain about the 360's DRM so much? Do the other systems not have this problem? The Wii has DRM that needs to be switched over to a new console in the refurb center as well (of course Wiis do not break as often).

If you buy a new Wii, you can't transfer your games or re-download them, right? Or can you save a downloaded game to an SD card and then play it on your friend's Wii?

What about the PS3? How do they manage to combat piracy with downloaded games?

Because it's extremly easy to pirate Wii virtual console games, and there's homebrew to move all your saves onto the SD card, even uncopyable ones.

It took Microsoft four months to switch over the DRM on my friend's replacement Xbox 360. Four months and dozens of phone calls and e-mails. That pretty much sums up the problem.

You answered your own question concerning the Wii. If more of them broke down, the DRM would be a bigger problem. Since they don't, it's not.

The PS3 has some pretty clear DRM restrictions, though it's negligible compared to it's competitors. You can download your paid content to five separate consoles, and then you have to pay to download it again. So if you anticipate your PS3 breaking down five times, it could present a problem. Since it doesn't, you can download your games on a few friend's consoles while still having some extra copies in case you buy a new PS3 for yourself.

Paying $10 for five total downloads of fl0w isn't such a bad thing when you are told upfront.
