Need a good how to for....

Soldering.

Im gonna be soldering a dc mod chip here soon...and i need a bit more info on it. *yes i know you do NOT need a modchip...im doing this to have a true region free NON BOOT DISK machine*

Ive seen a few people try to "resolder" the point on the motherboard and set the wire in it. Ive seen others use the normal style with wire.

Whats the best method...or "correct" method for wiring up a chip?

I'm not familiar with the first technique.

I'd go for the normal method.

Just tin your wire (ie melt solder onto you wire away from the motherboard) and then just put the wire onto the point you want to solder to and apply heat. It should stick on straight away. That's the easiest and cleanest way of doing a mod chip.

I'm not sure of your skill level with soldering so please excuse if the above sounds condescending.

When I solder chips I always follow the above method. It makes the cleanest connection and with the largest margin for error.

I wouldn't try to 'resolder' at all because you would need to apply excessive heat to the area and risk damaging the surrounding pcb and or chips. You would need to be highly skilled to pull it off without damaging the board.

thanks alot for the reply.

I had a feeling that would be the best way to go about it. Im just waiting for my chip to get here..the tracking number shows it stuck at customes

im just wondering...how do you hold the solder wire...the solder..."gun" AND the wire to the motherboard? I understand if your soldering a chip onto a board...but i have 4 wires to solder...hold each wire while holding solder whire and a "gun" lol

First, get a proper heat variable soldering iron. The cheap ones suck ass.

First apply solder to the wire and a little to your soldering iron (called tinning), then put your solder 'wire' down, take your tinned wire in your 'off-hand' and your soldering iron in your writing hand, put tinned wire to the point you want to solder to. apply heat, when the solder melts remove the soldering iron without moving your tinned wire. wait a second or so for the solder to go 'dull' (you can see it as it changes state) and then your wire is soldered properly.

see ive done alot of welding on old car restorations...so i figured this shouldnt be to hard, love building computers...just never did any soldering type of stuff

its really simple. i've done countless mods and tons of wire soldering.

just do as the other say:
get yourself a good soldering iron [go to radioshack for cheap good ones]
tin... tin... tin... this can't be stressed enough. TIN the wires beforehand, cause if not, you'll regret it. if its possible, tin the contact points on the DC aswell. [you may need really thin solder for this]

then your set. practice on some random electronic that you don't mind damaging.

Try practicing on some old modem or audio card or something you have laying around
