DC + CD-Rs

Post by D.D.D. »

I've heard that using CD-Rs wear out the drive or lens on DCs. Anyone found that to be true?

We've got enough threads asking this question already. In short, use good media and you're fine.

Every single forum search function I've ever used has been close to useless. Forums usually ship with poor search algorithms, people post using very informal terminology, and a thread with relevant material can still be 80% crap.

I didn't say it can't work. It just usually doesn't. I'm a library science student, so I'm allowed to be picked about my searching tools :)

My guess is that it does. I had a GD-ROM go bad recently, to the point where it wouldn't read ANY CDr media, but the truth is, buying a new DC and replacing the GD-ROM is inexpensive. I bought some POS DC for a few bucks (all yellowed case, gross, etc), swapped the GD-ROM, and I'm a-go again.

You dont think it just went bad naturally? You think CD-Rs killed it? All moving mechanical parts die eventually, especially in game consoles.

well the theory is that CD-rs get accessed more often and will thus wear the system out sooner. That may be but I just bought my DC new so I should be good for at least several years if not 5-7 or more which is fine.
