My Dreamcast themed arcade cabinet. The Dreamcab?

Post by mako72 »

Hey everybody. I just realized that I have never shared my pictures on racketboy.com even though it was one of the inspirations for my cab. Just thought I would do my first post and show you the arcade that I built. The small size came about because it was the exact dimensions of an empty spot in the room I was renting(I have moved since then). But I didnt want to settle for a small screen so I got a 22 inch velocity micro gaming monitor (found on clearance for $164), which was wider than the cabinet so I had to cut slits into the side panels to make it fit.
I wanted it to be a Dreamcast themed cab because its my favorite console ever. So the button colors and layout are the same as a DC. It has a slot for the VMU on the top and the artwork is all dreamcast characters. (Not my artwork. I believe credit goes to Tom Waterhouse)
It has a Happ super joystick but im planning to change it out with a Sanwa. I recently added some neon and LED's I had laying around in the garage from the car modding days. The sound system is pretty good too, its got a nice little subwoofer inside (sounds great when playing Rez!)The viewing angle is perfect for standing up or sitting down. Oh, and its all wraped in white vinyl to top it off ;)

Anyway, hope you like it.

I remember when you posted this at BYOAC. I always appreciated that it was between the desk and bed. Though I also remember atleast one guy berating you for using a second player controller instead of a dual arcade setup. Good work.

yeah I posted it a while back on that site. It doesnt really bother me that its a 1 player set up. I just think 2 sets of buttons would be way too cluttered since I had to build the cab 20 inches wide to fit it between my bed and dresser. Whenever a friend comes over and wants to do some 2 player, then ill just plug in a 2nd controller and let them use the joystick. It doesnt bother me since I love using the dreamcast controller.

Maybe now that i've moved to a larger place I can make a 2 player cab. Maybe Saturn themed?

A saturn cab would be great. I dig this one two, and I agree the 2nd player controller is ok. I usually play most games by myself, so who needs two conrollers when you only use it every couple months...or years. I like the VMU slot, too. Very nice home built cab.
