*Revised post* name format when burning iso/mp3/wav games?

So ive been testing some saturn games and I've noticed some are just bin/cue/, some are iso, and some have mp3 and wav attached to them. But if i mount the image (bin or iso) on its own it seems to run fine. The additional tracks seem to be soundtracks. So are the sound files as part of the game? or are they mainly there in case somone decided to play their saturn game in a cd player or something?

Potentially to double them as music for CDs, but likely also as filler. Original discs for the PS1 and Saturn era didn't always fill their disc space, so it's likely the game creators added a little extra content to fill the space.

The worst case I know of was the Tiger Woods golf title for the PS1. The production company for it had used South Park episodes to fill the rest of the CD, and you could run them when you put the CD in a PC. The kid who discovered it happened to be about ten years old...his mother was a little less than thrilled.

That is called CDDA audio. It's necessary for the saturn to play the soundtrack of the game…

The game just accesses the raw audio from the disk when needed. Thats why on some games when you open the tray the music stops but the game keeps playing for a while until data needs to be cached from the disk.

Games have pretty much stopped using that kind of audio now for sake of better compression to free up space on the disk for more important things like textures and/or movies.

ah i see now. Yeah i tested one game and burned just the iso and then burned one w/ ISO and waves. They first game played fine but there was no soundtrack no voices in the cinemas. The other one played perfect. Good to know.

So my next question is this. When burning a game w/ iso and wav, sometimes the mp3/wav are named xxxx02.mp3 (or wav). Do they have to be converted and renamed to track02.wav (or track_02 or whatever) or will it be ok to burn them w/ their file names as is. On some i can look at the included cue sheet and make the adjustments but on others that have no cue sheet im not sure if im supposed to follow a specific format or not.

The cue sheet needs to match EXACTLY the name of the files. The Cue sheet is what the burning program uses to 'inject' the audio in the right place on the disk. If the cue file isn't written properly the burning program won't find the files and therefore won't burn them at all. Sometimes it will give you an error, I think Nero does this. However some, like Toast titanium doesn't warn you and burns the disk anyway.

There's plenty of tools out there to create cue files automatically for you. Just search for 'cue creator saturn' in google or something. I think sega extreme have one on there. Not sure though and that site won't render properly when I'm at work.

I have the saturn cue maker already. I was just wondering of the file names had to be in a specific format before i made the cue for them. So it doesnt matter the file name (track01 or track_01 or gamename_01) as long as the cue sheet matches whatever file names i gave them?

I've had more success when i've named the tracks the same as the main data track. then just appended with _01.wav. EG mystupidgame.bin mystupidgame_01.wav mystupidgame_02.wav etc…
