Using commodore monitors with classic consoles

Post by metaleggman »

Have any of you used this setup before or now? I've been looking on eBay for Commodore 1702 and 1802 monitors, as I was reminded of Nintendo saying that commodore monitors were the only monitors that one could hook up a NES to. I've heard good things and so I'm thinking about getting one. I don't have too many pawn shops or used computer stores near where I live, so I may have to resort to eBay, but in the case that I can find a monitor nearby, I'll just have bring my NES to the store and see how it looks.

If I can't do that however, I'd appreciate some input on the monitor and some experiences you guys may have had in the past with the monitors. Right now, I'm using an old 13" monitor hooked up to a Kworld PC box, but the problem is that I can't play NES on it, as these weird vertical lines appear AND it's impossible to use the Zapper, etc on it. If someone still has one and could possibly hook up a NES and take a photo of how it looks, I'd appreciate it greatly.

Also, if someone has a monitor to spare or that they're willing to sell, post here. I'd love to know if I have options other than eBay.

Thanks in advance! :)

Also, if someone has any information on making or buying the S-video adaptor for the Commodore monitor, I'd appreciate that as well. :)

Commodore monitors rock! I used one for years with my consoles.

They are much sharper than any standard def TV out there. Excellent picture quality.

Unfortunately they tend to break down alot. For that reason I actually bought 3 monitors from a garage sale years ago. I think $10 each...

My brother sent me a special made S-Video cable for it, but I'm pretty sure it cost him $30+ to make. I'm not sure thats worth it, the picture isn't hugely better in s-video mode. I'm sorry but I don't have more info on how that was made.

I've been rocking the C64 monitor for every game room, tournament and party for over ten years. Shit looks great, even better with s-vid (have to make the cable yerself, though). Pic's to prove:

The master control tower here

On the floor, setting up here

In the foreground, from behind here

Getting some supergun love here

way in the back, on the left behind the Smashers here

even at the worst anime con ever, in our hotel room here

I hear about it all the time as a good video display for RGB outputs on old consoles.

The only time I've ever seen it in use though was when I was a little kid. My buddy in 4th grade only had B+W TVs in the house except the one in the living room. His parents wouldn't let him put his genny in the living room so he jammed out on this tiny ass B+W TV in his bedroom (like 8 inches, blech).

This was back when I was in my prime of starting to mess with TVs and didn't know a whole lot about it RGB at the time. But he had a C64 monitor sitting on top of his bureau just rotting away after they replaced the home PC (lil' bugger had so much more gizmos then my poor ass... though his family didn't have a lot of money either from what I remember, I guess they just invested in different things then my family). Anyways we hooked it up to that for great colour. I was sooo jealous after seeing how crisp the genny could look... especially since I played via RF on a shitty ass TV from the 60's myself.

Shwoop. Sounds like it should be a good purchase IF I can take a good look at it before hand. Hm...I somehow doubt I'll be able to find one around here, but I'll have to scour for used PC stores and the other likely suspects...IF not, it looks like I might be able to get one on eBay. Some of the ones sold on there are lookin' mighty perty. :)
