He makes a good point, the only difference is that the PS1 was actually an advanced piece of hardware when it hit with a solid library to back it up. The Wii shares no similar redeeming values, and very few of it's own. Nintendo's pretty much sold the world half-decade old hardware with tacked on waggle, and an even shittier 3rd party library than last generation. The fact they are quickly becoming the dominant console, means they can set the precedence for the next round. Gamers should be concerned, and I don't blame them.

Wow, that was a really excellent video. I guess I never felt in a niche but I started off PC and console gaming when I was four (1989) when I can at least remember playing my parents Intellevision (AD&D is something I remember vividly) and playing Mega Man on PC... among various other games but that onereally sticks out. Regardless of that my whole family has always seemed to love games and I think everyone playing games is a good thing for the industry and for society, games are interactive and challenge the mind. But that's really preaching to the choir here as I think most of us would agree that we would rather play a good game than watch a movie or tv. Anyway good stuff Moz.

Ummmm... yeah I would say the PS1 has some pretty damn good games. I didn't necessarily mean at launch. Still, even most of the first year PS1 games are better than all the 3rd party crap on the Wii. Nintendo's own games are all the system really has going for it.Mozgus wrote:Solid library? You know what though, I'm not going down this road again. We had another topic that got out of hand before. Best we just stay out of each other's way.

You just made it sound like they started off with a strong library, which they didn't. The only one worth playing at all today is Rayman, and that's not an exclusive at all.Flak Beard wrote:Ummmm... yeah I would say the PS1 has some pretty damn good games. Sony consoles just seem to start off rough and then grow on people...like a fungus, albeit an edible fungus.
Did he strike a nerve or something? Did he perfectly describe why you disapprove of them now? I mean you don't see me buying a Wii yet. Like Flak said, the library isn't up to par yet. But Nintendo is dominating again, and if they keep their sights set, they should be able to take games to the next level of mainstream just like Playstation did before it. And that's good for everyone. It might bring in surges of terrible games (in our opinions) but it'll also help encourage diversity in game design. And I dunno about you, but there's been quite a few "casual" games that I loved, that would have never existed in our "hardcore" market.PharmaceuticalCowboy wrote:I would definitely not watch the rest of the videos if you don't like the way Nintendo is headed, cause he backs them up pretty hardcore...

Nah, I agreed with most of what he said (except he bashed the GTA series and I've always loved it) and I love my Wii and although it might be a little short on FPS and RPG games there is a resurgence of light-gun games that kind of make it up a little bit with a genre that was almost forgotten. About casual games, I have no idea why they would be a bad idea as the people that would pick up a really crappy one would probably make a more informed decision in the future if they wanted to buy a more quality title (if they had a bad time with the budget title that is, if they are having fun that's a whole other post). So like I said before, casual gamers are only good for the industry.Mozgus wrote:Did he strike a nerve or something? Did he perfectly describe why you disapprove of them now? You know, Nintendo has a long, long history of throwing stuff up against the wall to see if it sticks.
about fifty percent of the time, it does.
No, the Wii isn't technologically amazing. No, third-party developers don't really have a grasp on how to use the wiimote to full effect.
But since when is gaming 100% about technology? You know, some of my favorite games are things like Q*bert, Galaga, Stun Runner, Tempest... None of these games is technologically stunning by any stretch of the imagination. They're solid gaming experiences. Okay, sure, one might argue that better technology makes for better storytelling, but for he that does I can gleefully point out the Interactive Fiction genre, or Uplink, or even ADOM. There are a multitude of wonderful ways to make a compelling game experience that have nothing to do with how many polygons you can get moving on the screen at once.
The problem in gaming, in my opinion, is that technology is getting too far ahead of us. It takes exponentially more man hours, and more money, to make a game that is acecptable by commercial standards, And in the rush to do that, I think a lot of companies lose sight of what actually makes a game stand the test of time. Why do you think retro gaming has made such huge strides forward in the past few years? The older systems certainly weren't "better" than the ones we have today. Yet emulation sites have hundreds of thousands of hits a day, so we can go back and play RC Pro Am, or Tactics Ogre, or Act Raiser, Or Sonic Spinball, Or whatever.
The Wii is Nintendo taking a step in a different direction. I say it's a brave step, and one that will do us gamers a hell of a lot of good.
